Mad's been testing Scotch whiskeys recently trying to find "his." I'm still a rum guy but I am enjoying the different character of a fine scotch. I might be getting old.

So far, what I have heard about the blends versus the single malts is true. Once I tried the latter, the blends hold no attraction anymore.

I'm sipping a nice 10 year Laphroaig right now and it's working some magic. I'll keep sampling, but this one has left a formidable impression.

What are the other Scotch drinkers here tipping back?

The 12 year blend? It wasn't bad. Better than Chivas IMO. I might pick up a bottle of JW green label.

Truth. What they say about age is also true- up to what you can afford. While I prefer single malt 12-18yr, most of the time I'm happy with a single malt 10. Some of the good ones I've tried are:
Image

Its a decent scotch that can be had for $30 or so, at least around here.

Also good, I really like Macallen scotches.

EXCELLENT. If I could afford it more often.... :toast:

There are TONS of Scotches out there, so I would suggest buying a different bottle anytime you get one, until you find one you fall in love with. At the local store, they have a decent selection, and usually have a good one on sale that I'll pick up and try.

Also, I only drink my scotch neat (straight up- no ice). It does make a difference in the flavor.

Three Sheets did an episode on Scotland and Scotch that I found educational, you may want to check it out.

I'm a bourbon guy. That said, I venture a visit to bourbon's cousin occasionally.

While it's blended (All Johnnys are), Green Label is what I've come to enjoy. The Blue label is just too pretentious, and expensive. I also have a bottle of Glenlivet 12 on the shelf.

Age? What does that matter? I'm younger then you and love a fine Scotch. First off, I prefer single malts over blends, by a long shot. I don't really even like Johnny Walker at all.

Glenlivet is a very accessible single malt. I've seen it to be a lot of people's first foray into single malts, and it's for good reason. On the cheaper side and very good. I'm a big fan.

Macallan single malts are also very good and not particularly expensive. The 18 year is very, very rich in flavor but I've only had it a few times when other people have offered it to me.

A harder one to find but one of my favorites is called Glenkinchie. It's not very cheap, and I don't have it very often either, but I really, really like it.

i think they're getting at age of the liquor, not the drinker.

Chivas Regal 18, generally, but a place near where I live sells Johnnie Black for 3 a shot, so I've been having that frequently.

When I turn 21 (in a few weeks), I plan on sampling various bottles of scotch. This thread helps me quite a bit.

I've got a bottle and a half of Loch Morar, 18 year, which is quite good; and a bottle of the 12 year. I discovered it in 2005 with a friend. We'd heard they are no longer producing, so we cleaned out the liquor store. I also enjoy Glenlivet and Glenmorangie- preferably in older varieties.

I have one buddy who drinks scotch, so I normally keep a bottle of Chivas in the bar.
I'm interested to hear feedback on others brands. Good topic.

I like the whole Captain Morgan range. The parrot bay for making my cherry rum ^cokes and the original and private stock straight.

Bacardi is fine but I sort of settle for that rather than go straight to it.

I have a Glenmorangie 15 in the arsenal. It wasn't bad. That was the first single malt I tried. I want to give the other Glens a try as well.

I'm a fan of most Johnny products for their respective price points, they're proof positive that blends can be damned fine.

That said, Blue is absolute nonsense, from a value standpoint. For that price, you can have infinitely better whiskeys.

I'm primarily a whiskey and rum guy myself, and I have quite a lot of both sitting around my house. That said, at present, my favorite is Aberlour A'bunadh, specifically batch 25. I have a friend who is part of the extended family, and so he's gotten me loads of their assorted products over the years.

(not my photo)

Who likes what rums? Anyone tried 10 Cane? For a lighter rum, it's outrageously good, and not particularly expensive. Very unlike any other light rum I've ever had, as I usually stick to anejo and stuff like Goslings.

I'm surprised to discover those smokey peaty Islay drams are what I was looking for. The Laphroaig is hitting on all cylinders and this Ardbeg chillin by the keyboard taint bad neither.
