* Lower Merion Township’s median household income (1999) was $86,373, second only to Whitpain Township ($88,993) in the County, and well above the medians for the County ($60,829), State ($40,106) and USA ($41,994). * Lower Merion ranked first in the County with the number and percentage of households with income over $100,000 with 10,086 households, or 44.1%, compared to the County (23.5%), State (10.3%) and USA (12.3%). * Lower Merion ranked first in the County in Per Capita Income at $55,526, compared to the County ($30,898), State (20,880) and USA ($21,587). * Lower Merion ranked 20th in the County (out of 62) in persons below the poverty level ($8,501) with 2,512, or 4.5%, compared to the County (4.4%), State (11.0%) and USA (12.4%).
Labor Force:
* Lower Merion ranked first in the County in residents in the labor force with 28,586, compared to the County (384,688), State (5,653,500) and USA (129,721,512). * Lower Merion ranked first in the County in the number and percentage of residents in the “white collar” labor force with 24,943 workers, or 87.3%, compared to the County (72.6%), State (59.1%) and USA (59.7%). White collar consists of the following subcategories: Management, Professional, Sales, and Clerical Office. Lower Merion’s 43.9% of residents in the Professional category was exceeded in the County only by Narberth’s 49.4%, compared to the County (27.2%), State (20.2%) and USA (also 20.2%). * Lower Merion ranked first in the County in percentage of resident labor force in the Services sector with 17,766, or 62.1%, compared to the County (44.4%), State (42.2%) and USA (42.0%). Lower Merion’s next highest resident employment sector was in Finance, Insurance and Real Estate with 3,128, or 10.9%, compared to the County (10.0%), State (6.6%), and USA (6.9%).
Housing Type:
* Lower Merion ranked first in the County in total housing units with 23,699, compared to the County (297,434), State (5,249,750) and USA (115,904,641). * Lower Merion ranked first in the County in the number of single family detached homes with 13,691, but this was 32nd in the County in percentage of total housing units with 57.8%, compared to the County (56.0%), State (55.9%) and USA (60.3%). * Lower Merion ranked first in the County in the number of housing units within a multifamily structure containing five or more units with 5,970, but this was 9th in the County in percentage of total housing units with 25.2%, compared to the County (16.6%), State 11.3%) and USA (17.3%).
Marital Status:
* Lower Merion ranked first in the County in residents age 15 or older with 49,075, compared to the County (598,897), State (9,861,713) and USA (221,148,671). * Lower Merion ranked first in the County with married residents with 30,203, but this was 33rd in the County in percentage of those over age 15 with 61.5%, compared to the County (60.5%), State (54.3%) and USA (54.4%).
