Hey NICO world and VH people. I was somewhat concerned about some buildup on the liners of a couple of the cylinders. This was only on two of them; the last one on the right bank and the 2nd to last one on the left bank. I don't remember what the cylinder order is, but they seem to be on the same part of the stroke. I have no idea what i'm talking about. Anyway, the pictures show the two dirty liners in comparison to one of the others. Don't pay attention to how clean the cylinder top is or isn't. I cleaned the one off a bit.

Was this engine sitting for a long time? It looks like maybe the intake valves were open on those two cylinders and some water got in a formed some surface rust.

That, sir, is a brilliant explanation. I'm not really rebuilding them, more like cleaning and making sure everything is good. Much of the reason the heads are removed was to get the engine up stairs.

I'd hit the walls with a red scotchbrite pad and spray it with some PB blaster before you spin the motor at all. Rust can't be good for the rings to go over.

That sounds like good advice. The guy who sold it to me had it in the car and sent me a video of it running right before he sold it to me. From everything I've seen, it looks like he had it out front with the hood open for a good amount of time. That would explain the schmutz and the amount of dirt and leaves I found in the valley.

Do not use the red, it is fiber with glue and aluminum oxide. The particals are so small they will lodge in the pores of the metal. = scored walls and flat cams! You can use aluminum polish to remove the stains. You need to completely disassemble to properly clean.
