hi,i just joined cuz i am a new 240sx owner and i bought the car cuz i want to do autocross with it and i am only 16 so expect lots of questions from me. so my question is for my first scca solo II event i am wondering whta class i will be in. the mods i have are tein basic dampers and maybe a 2.5inch exhaust depending on how soon i get the cash and time to do it up. so would i be in street prepared? and what if i gutted all the rear of my interior with no back seats and interior side panels, would that bump me up to the prepared class? thanks!

Just go to STS class and run for yoru first few events, it doesnt matter since i almost guarantee you wont be winning (unless teh turnout is weak).

Just get used to it, have fun and learn your car/techniques at first. You will then realize what mods you will need to be competitive and decide from there what class you want to prep for. Good luck!

Do not gut your interior. That will throw you into a Mod class. As a newbie you won't win no matter what class you are in, but with a gutted interior the class you will end up in = mega dollars.

sts is all n/a cars with displacement less than 3.5l (i think) that do not fall into a "stock" class. certain things like adding an LSD, i think maybe headers or more than just "bolt on" modifications will pop you into d street prepared.

if you take out the interior panels you would actually be in some sort of prepared or modified, but unless you win events they don't really care. i run in STS and i have my trunk gutted.. no big deal. depends on the people that run the event though.

in my area the top contenders in STS are a golf GTI, an older sentra, a 2.5 RS, and an integra/RSX. but i think i came in 2nd place last event...

so you have to pay more money if you are better equipped (are in a higher class)?

You have to pay more money to be competitive is what people are saying. I can't ever see a 240SX being competitive at a MOD class, and even Street Modified(SM) would be a MAJOR stretch for someone with less than $5-7k in mods on one of these cars. The cars that dominate that class are usually BMW E36 M3's with superchargers and widebody kits.

Don't take out your interior, although you can legally take out your spare. Most things you will probably do to the car will put you in STS, but a motor swap puts you in SM.

Just go out there and have fun, and don't be afraid to ask someone for some pointers or maybe to ride with you and give you some advice. Don't really expect to win for a LONG time.

I autocrossed pretty actively for about two years and I was about midpack with a really underprepped car for the class. Guys could go out there and beat me with only a few events under their belt because they had R-compounds and a few mods. On the other hand, I did beat some guys with maybe R-compounds and a mostly stock car with my mostly stock car on street tires. Skill does matter alot, but money does as well(up to a point).

While on the subject, anyone know any good websites for finding autox tracks/events in your particular area?

http://www.scca.org/

Autocross is called SoloII. Just find your region and they should have a schedule and information up.
