My car over heated recentley, so i swapped in a new thermostat, and bled it. and it still overheats, so i bought a new waterpump, and i pulled the old one off. Only to discover imminent doom. the old pump has no impeller blades, none, all sheared off, and theyre not in the housing, and didnt fall out when i pulled it off. The impelllers on the old pump evacuated somehow, somwhere. All thats left is the centre section that the impellers attach to.

What do i do?

Where did they go?

am i going to have to pull the whole block apart and go fishing for metal bits?

could the impeller blades of have evacuated in to the lower radiator hose?

Basically am i Fu&*@?

I've seen rotted V8 Ford ones. I've seen impellers that have fallen off and were sitting in the pump cavity.

I've never heard of one disappearing.

Hopefully they are little pieces and are all wedges in the radiator. Without an impellar, the fragments can't have wedged in too hard.I'd disconnect the radiator, and stick a garden hose in the opposite direction to where you think the parts might have gone.

Will be an interesting story when you find the bits.

well i asked around, and from what i gather the pump pulls water out of the block and sends it down the return hose to the bottom of the radiator, which is where i will look first. Hopefully thats where it went, the circular peice of metal that the impellers are cast as a part of, is still there, i cant quite fathom as to how the pump managed to sckrew itself like this.

removed lower rad hose, and nothing came out xcept for ugly antifreeze, so can i assume that the impellers are in the block.

Or could it be that they (the impellers) were so rusted that they slowly disintigrated themselves in to a barley noticeable powder? I recentley swapped my radiator because the old one developed a crack under the filler hole. ( Ive got thicker altima radiators with the twin elecric fans, and the plastick ens tanks, which get hit by the hood cuz its too big). Mabey some of the impellers are in there?

What happens if they get in to the block?

nothing in the old radiator or hoses.

What should i do next?

I'm tempted to just put the new pump on, replace the timing belt, and just drive it, and pray it doesn't die.

you can always pull the head and check the water lines.

if you over heated you may need to do this anyway to swap that head gasket.

i was very confused when reading ur post, until i saw ur from Michigan. most people dont have to "Thaw" their garden hoses. you now know this means a meet up is in order after i get mine back on the road.

sorry, no real information for ya ha.

If nothing comes out, I would honestly just put it back together and drive it, albeit cautiously. Its your decision though, do what you feel is right.

Ive asploded many a CA18 water pump.

Ninja Edit: Ive asploded many a CA18 (well, just one many times) as well, so there's THAT.

Kinda sad, neither of us really have a CA anymore. We have both migrated to different Nissan platforms. I still have a CA of course, but its not a complete motor.

Whats with the brutality Gabby? Why on your guard all the time?

UPDATE:

RTV'd eveything, bolted it all together, counted the teeth on the belt twice before turning it over twice by hand then counted them twice again, bolted it all together, filled it up with water and let it idle, so i could beed it. Let it heat up, build pressure than checked for working heat which i didnt have before, when the pump blew, took it around the block, and it seems to have moar power, which is werid , so immona drive it carefully then ill get my timing ligkt back next week and ill doublecheck the timing then.

on the other hand ive been diving my girls 2.0 new beetle, which is gutless and automatic, so mebbe thats why it feels like moar power

as for flushing the chunks out, i think that the pump was so rusted and rotten that the only thing it seemed to spit out rust chunks, im sorta playing russian roullete here, but whatever.

thanx for the imput all

Glad to hear everything is *seemingly* okay!

Having flower vase in car requires return of "man card" to this forum.

Funny. When I popped my CA, I had to drive my fiancee's 2.0 Beatle as well. Does yours smell like crayons? I do love driving that car on the high way however. So comfy.

i ended up speeding all over the place, zee germans build smooth at 80-90mph cars.

my 240 is so finiky that you gotta work for it, specially if it's cold, speeding takes alotta work. and i hate that it wont shift up till a crtain speed, i hate slushboxes.worst invention ever
