If I were to make a list of MUST SEE scary movies, here are my top 10.

The shining.
A nightmare on elm street (the first one)
The grudge
The woman in black
Resident evil
The hills have eyes (the new one)
Texas chainsaw massacre (the first one)
Room 1408
Silent Hill
Halloween

*edit*
I'm currently watching The Rite. It's not making my list.

*edit 2*
Just watched The Conjuring. Wow it makes my list! I would replace either The Hills Have Eyes, or Room 1408.

Halloween is definitely the scariest movie I have ever seen. Michael Myers creeps me out. He's why I don't watch them anymore. :ohno: Texas Chainsaw massacre is also creepy because it's based on a true story. I've heard people say Children of the Corn is scary but I've never seen it.

Fast and the Furious.

It's a terrifying tale of racers who know nothing about cars despite owning a garage and spending all day working on cars. Racers who are surprised to see 2JZ engines in Supras, and where Nissan SR20s are sold for a premium 2 weeks before race wars to Honda Civic owners. These terrifying cars have dozens of gears and require constant shifting, where upon leaving the start line of a race enter a parallel world where it takes 2 minutes to run a ten second quarter mile. This universe is so hazardous that it causes danger to manifolds at high RPMs and floors fall out of cars for no reason.

Terrifying.

Most scary/horror movies (especially 80's films) I find pretty hilarious because they're so dumb/predictable.

The Japanese original Ringu (American re-make The Ring) I found to be eerie the first time I saw it. I've seen them both and I think because the former had no CG budget made it creepier. Ju-On:The Grudge (not the American remake) was also very creepy. I dunno, most Asian horror and crime dramas I've seen have been pretty disturbing/creepy.

Speaking of Japanese movies, I forgot about suicide club and battle royal. :bigthumb:

Blah, those movies are classics, hence the reason why the top 20 are scored so high, yet not that great. For example, Evil Dead (1981) was loosely redone as Cabin in the Woods (2012) and Cabin in the Woods is certainly better than the first; better character development, storyline, twist, cinematography, etc..

Room 1408 has suspense with some (thankfully not too much) shock horror thrown in. Add to that another good performance by John C.,the heartbreaking moment when his daughter dies in his arms, and that he kills himself to end the curse, and It makes my top 10. Old movies are great and all, just like old cars, lots of character, but really not that great at the end of the day, trumped by more modern productions.

Frankenweenie and Little Shop of Horrors gets ranked ABOVE woman in black!? How are those even horror movies? King Kong gets #13!?

I thought The Ring was scary, and it's been a long time since I've seen it, but all I remember is the ending killed it for me, however, i don't remember the ending. The Grudge scared the crap out of me and my wife and she hated it when I'd make that sound that the girl would make.

I keep hearing good things about the Conjuring. I am headed to the movie store now. Hope they still have it on bluray.

Holy crap. I am trying to watch The Conjuring alone in the dark and I keep finding myself peaking through my fingers. I will take Room 1408 off my list and replace it with this movie.

*edit*
Had to pause the movie a total of three times and eventually turned all the lights on in the house. No spoilers here, but up until the antagonist makes its appearance, the movie was very scary. Like The Grudge and other movies involving the supernatural, it's the absence of "an enemy" that makes it scary. Once you can actually face your "enemy", it's not nearly as frightening.
