alright, here's my problem. i started my car tonight and it's about -3 degrees(C) and it wasn't outside for long. maybe about 2 hours, anyways i head out for the night and i get on the freeway. i go to put it in 5th and it doesn't want to go in. i keep trying, nothing but a little bit of grinding noises. so i head back home and i keep trying to get it in 5th. even when i'm parked i can't get it in 5th, also when the car is off it wouldn't go in 5th. after a couple of minutes of forcing it into gear it finally goes in. i drive around no problems it feels normal like nothing is wrong. so my question is what was the problem? does this mean my clutch, transmission is going????? or perhaps should i try some different gear oil, i'm using redline 75w90 syntehtic so should i try some different fluid?any help would be greatly appreciated

something stuch in the 5th gear slot doesn't sound good at all. there shouldn't be a any loose particle in there to begin with. there's got to be a better explanation.

5th gear synchro gone? Possibly teeth missing? Those are pretty much the only explanations short of the fork not working. That's not the case since you did actually get it into gear.

try shifting into another gear then going back to fifth, if anythings wrong this will normally fix it, if not id say probably syncros if you hear grinding and stuff.

ya i kept trying to put it in 5th and if it wouldn't get in there i would throw it back in 4th. if the syncros were gone how would i be able to get into 5th at all? i've never really had any troubles with this before, i'm going to change my fluid today and hope it never happens again.

synchros are a possibility. i am leaning toward a bent or otherwise messed up shift fork. i say change fluid and clean magnet(inspect for big pieces of metal) and forget about it.

Werd, what I was thinking.

Also, keep in mind that it takes a good while to warm up the transmission fluid, you might notice that certain gears (3rd comes to mind) will be harder than usual to get into because of a lack of lubrication.

well i changed my transmission fluild today, haven't looked at the fluid yet but i did find a big chunk of brass metal??? i found it in the transmission where you put the shifter into the transmission, not sure what it's called maybe the shift link? anyways i found it in there, here's some pics. so either that broke off of somethign or it wasn't suppost to be in there and i think that it maybe got in the way of something when i was shifting into 5th that one day. cause it feels normal like it always does.

hard to tell what that is. blurry pic. brass is what the synchros are made of. is it all buggered up? or is it just a piece of brass? if it aint broke(anymore) dont fix it.

no problems lately, except for one very weird thing happened yesterday. i was driving about 110kmh then all of a sudden my speedo just dropped, sat at the bottom, then it kicked back in? i'm going to make sure everything is connected under my car but damn maybe all these signs mean i should sell my car?!?!?!?!

since where on the topic of syncro's and transmissions what would be there smart thing to do. buying a used transmission(+/- $300) or rebuilding(+$1000) the one i currently have?

now with rebuilding i've heard/read you can use the same internals that are in the ka transmission. but i read something about how the 5th gear is different? is that true and is that bad or good?

its not worth rebuilding unless you have lots of down time to spare and can get the parts cheap. it would be less than $1000 though unless you pay someone to do it. just get another trans and swap it. i believe you can use the ka trans internals but i heard all the gears are taller.

sr and ka trannys are interchangeable just swap the bellhousing you can do the same with rb trannys but the gear ratios are different in those the rb20 trans is the weaker of the two not sure about vg30 trans but gtr trannys should work if you remove the awd setup not sure how difficult this is might just have to change the tailshaft of a rwd rb transmission or it might be a huge pain in th a**

I have a KA trans.. whatever difference there may be between the two, there is no seat of the pants change.
