As of now we are aware that this guy goes by the following accounts

How he works ( he wants to send you an overpayment then he asks youto send a refund for his overpayment to have the item shipped)

If you have been contacted by this guy please be aware he is scammingyou.

How exactly does he make money though? It's not that important to me, but I'm curious as to how it works. ;)

It sounds like the Nigerian scam. He probably sends you extra money via a cashier's check and then asks you to send the overpay somewhere else via Western Union (sending it to a friend he owes money to, etc.). The scam part is that the check he sends you is counterfeit and by the time the issuing bank tells *your bank* that it's bogus, you've already sent him or his accomplice a bunch of your own money (and your check probably won't be bogus).

Something like that. People usually do it when buying large items like cars. They'll say they're from somewhere out of the country and they're going to send you $10,000 when you only want $6000 for the car. You get to "keep a few hundred for the trouble" and then forward the rest on to a friend in the States who the buyer owes money.
