SBC 305 240sx build!

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

it is rather easy tho, not a whole lot of work involved. just make a pan to fit and work from there.

and wiring is non existant. its like 3 wires. seriously.

good luck tho! u doing a 5 speed or auto?

the_momo what did you have to do about the drive shaft? and fuel? can i use the stock fuel pump and just get a regulator?

you will have to get a custom driveshaft made with a 240sx diff flange and a muncie yolk...or get the diff flange changed to a GM flange and have the driveshaft shortened/balanced...

as for the fuel..yes you can use the stock electric pump, but you will have to run a carb FPR...basicly something like this http://www.aeromotiveinc.com/products.php?prod=17

either that or you can unplug the stock fuel pump and put a holly red/blue on the line and it will pull fuel through the stock unplugged pump

Im doing a 350 in my Z31 right now which is why i know some of this stuff lol. Im almost done..just need to finish welding the mounts, and have the driveshaft made.

standard carbureted 305-cube stock. In baseline form, the 305 was no powerhouse, making 221 hp at 4,800 rpm.

I am assuming you mean no one has done a 305 because not including my turbocharged 327 there have been several sbc's dropped into a 240sx.327, 350,383 have definitely all been done.

good luck. I had inland empire driveshaft build me an aluminum onefor my build. along with u joints it was 450 for a 3.5" driveshaft.

as far as using the stock fuel pump , i don't think it will support the horsepower and torque you can get from that engine with some mods.at least get a walboro 255lph . they are cheap under $150.

that is my opinion anyways.

good luck.

you should check out http://www.silviav8.com

there have to be at least 20 or more people on there with 305 & 350 - 240's.As well as a lot of ls1 240's.

just a warning... 305's don't like hp. you'll find yourself wanting to drop a 350 ot bigger in later on.

thats part of my plan is to run the 305 for awhile and the mounts are the same for a 350 so all i would really have to do is drop it right in.

one more question for you guys that have done this. what do i do about where the drive shaft meets the rear diff? i wish someone had a write up would make things so much easier.

I think on mine they used a pathfinder piece(ujoint) that bolted to the flange on the input pinion. I had to redrill my flange as I have the q45 diff with a larger bolt pattern . custom driveshaft , you measure the length let them know what it is mounting to on either end and they build it. they will also ship if you are not local for pickup

Inland Empire driveshaft

a 3" should be plenty .

my 3.5" is rated at 750hp

I am also buying a brand new crane cam from a friend for $40 all i need is gaskets, transmission, fuel pressure regulator, and drive shaft and should be up and running.

If you can place the tailhousing of the new trans with in an inch or so of the original location you could probably just have the yoke changed on your current driveshaft.

you complained about budget and the word here was that the 305 does not produce too much hp. I personally go for overkill to ease my mind in ways like this. again my first suggestion was a 3" aluminum driveshaft.

mine cost 450 for a 3.5"

regarding fuel I am using this fpr with the 3-20psi spring(base pressure adjustment) , easily adjusted.

http://www.aeromotiveinc.com/products.php?prod=15

i also am running boost so the boost reference is necessary. if you are planning on running boost later this or the a1000 by pass are good options. with out boost you just leave the boost reference port open to atmospheric pressure.

you need to run it to the intake manifold. make sure and put the check valve in the line. the brake booster hose is 3/8" if I remember right. you want to put the check valve as close to the vacuum source as possible.

The 305 is one of the weakest engines ever produced . Just spend the extra money and put a 350 in it.
