Hello guys,

I was planning to Satin Black my whole car, i was just wondering how to go about this heres what im planning on getting, any advice would be helpful

Materials:Sander (Orbital? or DA? whats the diff?)rust-oleum primersatin black paintsandpaper 60, 120, 400*wetsand

Procedure:1. degrease surface, use dishwasher soap2. sand paint down til base (any pics of this?)60 -> 120 -> 400-westanding?3. degrease again? wash.4.primer5. 400 wetsand?6. 1st layer of satin black7. wetsand 4008. 2nd layer of satin black?

Well im going for the good satin look, i dont want it to look shootty or ricerlooking for a good clean satin look, just maybe a temp thing

Anyways any comments on my procedure or materials will be very helpful. Any unnecessary procedures? Also do you think i can do the whole car by hand? Like a couple panels a weekend? Or a buy a sander?

Thanks-JeFF

O BTW, im trying to aim for this:

Hey man, I like the Satin black look. I'm about to do it on my Sentra.

I've been working in an autobody shop for a while. I'll tell you how we do it. We get great results and have a very good reputation with most of our work being on new BMWs.

I'm gonna do this as if you don't have any bondo or dents.

no need to degrease before sanding.

1. sand all painted area untill it's no longer shiny. use 600 sandpaper. wet or dry - depending on paper used. Completely smooth and dull is what you want. no need to go through to the base coat. just more work for you. 2. we use a scotch brite pad to scuff the surface for paint. 3. this is a good time to put on a coat of primer if you want a really good finish. you'll still get a nice finish without it though. adding primer just means you get to sand it again. 320 -> 600wet. If you primer it. have a cheap can of basic black spray paint to lightly dust over the surface of the primer. helps you get a nice even finish when you sand it. also helps you find and pinholes. Bondo has a spot putty just for filling those tiny little spots. apply and wetsand with 600.any imperfection you can feel will show through the paint. try to get them out when sanding.

once everything is sanded to your expectations. wash the car like you would any other time. soap and water. dry it off really good. use a compressor with an airblower if you can. wipe off any surfaces you're gonna be taping to so the tape sticks well. get it all taped up and ready. now is your time to use the degreaser. I guess dish soap will work, we use some industrial strength crap at the shop. wipe once over with a clean rag. then go over again with a new rag. look for foggy areas, they're not clean yet. once it's clean then you're ready to spray. Do lots of light coats. let it fry some before loading more onto it. there's really no need to wet sand before coats unless you see there's a dirt spot or something. use 2000 sandpaper and just nib that little spot out. clean that spot up before adding more paint. add light coats untill you have a nice even finish all around the car. let it dry a while. Now when you clear it, lots of clear gives you room for error later. When it comes to wetsanding and buffing, a thin layer of clear will break through pretty quickly. extra coats of clear will protect from that. as long as it doesn't get runs in it when it's applied too heavy. be careful of that. some runs can be sanded out with 2000 grit, others requite a small block. still 2000. other little imperfections should sand out with 2000. always wet. they'll buff out.

hopefully if you follow these steps, you'll get a great, long lasting finish. or maybe you've already finished it. if so, I'd be interested in seeing how it turned out. hope i wasn't too confusing.

I would NOT use 60 grit, it will cut to deep. I would even propably use highter then 400 wet, maybe even close to 1000...make sure you use some type of block to sand with (dont just hold the paper in your hand when sanding it will leave lower spots where your fingers are) when cleaning inbeween coats use "cheese cloth" you can get it at any auto parts store, its a tacky cloth that will pick dirt up off the paint that is inbedded. GOOD LUCK....I'm a fan of the satin look also!

I'm preping my car right now. So much body work is needed cause the previous owned tried to fill the body lines so I'm chizzleing it all out and it's actually not as bad as I thought it would be I got one whole side done today. Then I used about 80 grit or 60 idk something real rough to sand all the excess filler and 2 layers or paint (car was painted a few times). Then once I'm done with the filler **** I'll sand the rest with 120 and then probably 400

Using an orbital sander because I borrowed it from a friend works pretty well not sure about a da though

Not sure what color I'm gonna paint it yet I'll prob end up doing flat black just because. But I'll be doing a few coats of primer before it

why does everyone paint it flat black? even when it's done well, it doesn't looks as good as gloss. i rattle canned mine gloss red because it was originally was flat black, and i think it looks much better and stands out from all the flat black rattle canned 240s.

lol at us bandwagoners, with our satin black. we suck so hard. i cant believe how bad we suck. every single one of us did it cus we wanted to be like the other bandwagoners. its soooooo crazy, it really is.

red? really? so you DONT look like EVERY other 240? lol at you. roll your fenders and drop your car over those wheels asap homie. perhaps then, you will stand apart from 90% of 240 owners...

satin black here, red wheels, arctic camo hood. my car TOTALLY is identical to all the other satin black 240's. all 4 of us total.

satin =/= flat primer.

cus i TOTALLY winged it the first time around, in some of the worst conditions ever for painting... and **** for prep work, cus it was all hand sanded.

will it be black again? probably, but a chance of no... but it sure as hell wont be glossy

haha, so true. i didnt even realize what i was writing. red is a very common 240 color. i guess i just see a lot of very poorly done murdered out 240s and i think a gloss color can really improve the looks of a car over flat black.

i respect you mr. greeneyes for the simplicity of your car and the mods you have proritized. your paint job is better than 90% of rattle canned black 240s. im simply saying that why not use a gloss paint over flat black?

and i agree, my wheels looked like dog****. however, as of now, i maxed out camber, slammed my coils, and pulled/rolled the **** out of my fenders, and they are looking much better.

you going to rattle can it or use a spray gun..

if you rattle can it.. friend of mine did his one panel at a time for about a week.. helps prevent against overspray..

sparygun obviously would be much cleaner..

rofl at ibwc, yeah satin IS NOT flat black. i think my paint job came out good all things considering. i def wouldnt start at 60 grit though, way to rough. with good prep it can come out fine. keegan's looks good even thoguh you can see a few bad spots, but thats what great about rattle canning, touching up bad areas costs like $5

LMAO! i dunno if anyone watches family guy but it is like that one time that little girl said " you are the weakest link, good bye" then Stewie straight regulated her butt... I guess u have to see it. That made me laugh very hard though because i read it with a lot of sarcasm... Why i am letting you all know, because i can

This would be an AMAZING IDEA for someone like me. Would i do it to my car? NO would i partake in doodling on another persons chalkboard car? HELL YES. If i WAS to do it to a car though i would limit the chalkboard paint to the doors and the hood. Everything else would be a regular color. Yep.... Every week could have a new picture until it all wore off... Or i can put fake tally marks of all the ricers i put to shame that day hahaha. Great idea man!

Satin black, satin black,Replacement for real paint. No shine, no slide, just ways to hide, when sliding in the rain. You're better off saving, get a Macco job, rather than driving the Satin Black Blob.
