Whatever you find in your garage, pretty much. If you're going to have to purchase it anyway, I'd guess around 200 to take the paint off and perhaps 1500 to make it nice and shiny smooth. Hell, just buy an assortment of different stuff. It's cheap and you never know when you'll need it again and what kind you'll want.

sanding off the paint will take awhile mostly in the nicks and crannys just use paint stripper and then sand it with some 1500 grit and paint it and clear it to make it look good. I was thinking of buying a spare valve cover and doing it my own but too lazy.

1500 is crazy for polishing first. i use an 800 then a 1000, i never even get to the 1500.

i use mother's mag and aluminum polish after that, many people will agree its the best, and in all honesty it works miracles, even on wheels. Which i dont quite understand because i'm pretty sure they have a clear coat...

i gotta agree with using paint stripper too. I just use a wirebrush on a drill, but it takes HOURS! You can polish some serious **** with a wirebrush though, but on aluminum you can quickly start diggin in too far, then you have to go to town with the sandpaper.

also i recommend wet sanding, because ive never gone through so much sandpaper polishing parts. ****, im getting way ahead of myself as you are jsut doing the letters, but for future searchers it might be good info...
