I found a very very nice truck but I ran the carfax and it had been totalled and had a salvage title. I'm leaning towards staying away from it even though I fell in love with it when I saw the picture of it. Do you guys agree??

May be a good idea to stay away!

Depends on what happened. Occasionally, "totalled" can be simply because the cost to repair was less than the resale value.

It was totalled like 6 months after it was bought new, so I'm assuming it was fuc*ed up pretty good. Why does the truck I love and can afford have to have been totalled.....my luck.

I don't think salvage titles are that bad.. except the car is a lot cheaper :D

usually there are no problems with them, at least i never had a bad experience yet, my moms 99 subaru impreza outback has a salvage title, no problems except minor stuff inside, some small pieces missing, havent found another car in junk yard yet tho..

Also my 2000 hyundai accent has a salvage title.. paid 2grand for it with 25k miles on it, now if thats not a good deal then i dont know what is.. i drove it to 50k miles and gave it to my brother, still running strong.

Now i got my 240sx, for 3100, it has a salvage title due to hail, again.. ill fix the hail damage and i got a good deal on the car, now i can get a CF hood and put the rest of the money into upgrades that i would have paid for the car.

just check that the frame is not bent etc.. thats really the only thing to look out for, or massive engine problems

good luck with the truck though

How can you tell if the frame is only slightly bent? I'm assuming you can't see that by your naked eye, so how do you tell?

If you measure the distance from the edge of the tire to the left and right side of the fender, and then compare it to the distances on the other side of the car, it can give you a little bit more information about the frame's condition. That's what I see experts do at the auto auctions when they don't have the ability to do get advanced vehicle history reports..

I wish it was close to home so I could take it to a local body shop, but it's in Connecticut, so I don't know any good body shop's out there. Maybe I could see if my uncle or one of the body shop guys(family friends) would go with me.

Keep in mind that some insurance companies will not want to write physical damage coverage (comprehensive and collision) on a vehicle with a salvage title. Hell, they may refuse to write it all together.

If you get the car checked out and it looks OK, I'd still check with my insurance company/agent.

As a general rule, steer clear of salvage titles. With as many Toyota Tacomas are out there, it's not hard to find one in good shape, good price, with a clean record.

"Buyer beware" the law of pay now or pay later is always in effect.

Do a search here for "salvage" - Lots of good threads about it, so you can make an informed decision.

Cliff Notes: If you can afford to lose the $ you paid for it (if it's hit hard in an accident), then go for it. Don't plan to mod it, just drive the piss out of it.

I agree with EstoMax. Its a nice way to get a heck of a deal on a decent car. Have it inspected of course, and make certain that things are in good working order and that its reasonably safe.

The "It was severely damaged" in the report bothers me ... in your shoes, I would pass on this one. Just my personal opinion.

Keybank called me today to see if I had found a vehicle yet and I asked them if they would even finance a truck with a salvage title and they said no.....so I guess it doesn't matter anyway.
