I am towing a one-axle 5x8 trailer. I am not sure how much it weighs, but a similar U-Haul trailer weighs under 1,000 lbs. The trailer company which built this trailer is reputable for making heavy-duty products, so I assume the trailer weighs somewhere around 1,500 lbs.

Carrying a small load in the trailer, I notice considerable body sag at the rear axle - the height in the rear wheel well decreases by four to six inches.

My questions:

1. Is this normal? Might it be an indication of spring sag? The rear of the car does not sag without a load.

2. Is this bad for the car, the engine, the tires? I am taking a three-day-long road trip soon and want to make sure the car is good shape.

3. What can I do to remedy it? A friend was telling me about shocks that you can inject compressed air into. Is this overkill? I just put new KYB gas-a-just shocks on the rear.

Thanks!

Maybe the trailer has too much of the weight at the tongue. That was part of the issue when I towed my sailboat but the rear shocks were also shot at the time.

The R50 has notoriously soft rear springs. I've been towing with my 2000 for about 9 years, and the first time I put my trailer on the Pathfinder I was shocked just how much it sagged. I'm not sure what could happen when towing like that, but it can't be good. The Airlift 1000 load leveling kit works wonders, and even better would be to replace the rear springs with a medium duty aftermarket spring.
