I've been told that Nissan(any dealership) will service/repair/replace any factory OE safety equipment on ANY nissan vehicle for FREE? Anyone know the truth behind this?

Reason askign is my shoulder belt is fraying(sp?) pretty bad in the middle, and id liek to get it fixed. I wouldnt mind paying for it, I'd just like to know if they DO/WILL service the safety parts for FREE

i believe its required by law that any dealership, regardless of make, replace safety equipment for free...as long as its a nissan dealer in this case, obviously you have to go to the company that your car came from

you have some of your info a little confused. Dealerships are required to do any recalls for free not replacing random parts that wear out. True a seatbelt should not wear out, but you might have to prove that it wasnt your fault.

Actually they are requried by law to replace it but only if your the original purchaser of the vehicle, seatbelts have lifetime warrantys, for as long as the original purchaser owns the vehicle, you might be able to get away with it, but i would definately call your local dealer to find out

I know that Maxima's had a lifetime warranty on all their seatbelts, no matter how many owners the car has passed through. I imagine it must be the same for the 240SX since it has the automatic seatbelts which could potentially fail.

Nissan issued a recall on the S13's automatic seatbelts. If yours hesitates, if the belt is frayed, if, for whatever reason you aren't happy with the belts, take your car to a Nissan dealer andd they'll replace them. Of course, if there's really nothing wrong with the belts, you'll be wasting their time and yours. Up to you, of course.

I'm quoting this from Page 12 of the 1993 Nissan Warranty Information Booklet:

WHO IS THE WARRANTOR

NISSAN warrants all parts of your 1993 NISSAN vehicle seat belt system supplied by NISSAN.

NISSAN indicates Nissan Motor Corporation in the U.S.A., P.O. Box 191, Gardena, California 90248-0191, which provides Consumer Service for NISSAN vehicles in the Continental United States.

(Proper use is outlined in your OWNER'S MANUAL)*Color fading, spotting or other cosmetic items when the belt is otherwise functioning properly.*Air bags and related electronic control systems which are covered by the Powertrain warranty*EXTRA EXPENSES - LIMITATION OF DAMAGES

THIS WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES SUCH AS LOSS OF THE USE OF THE VEHICLE, INCONVENIENCE OR COMMERCIAL LOSS.

OBTAINING WARRANTY SERVICE

Okay, let's address the issues. First, and foremost, no automobile manufacturer is required to warrant their seat belt systems for life. Just ask the folks who bought Ford vehicles with automatic seat belts. Think of how many Thunderbirds and Escorts you see running around with their belts jammed in mid-track. There is no law mandating it, period.

The seatbelt warranty was a selling point and a courtesy to Nissan's customers who were rightfully concerned about the long-term reliability of motorized seat belts.

Second, Nissan's seatbelt warranty is NOT limited to original owners. Anyone can get service under this warranty.

Third, and most important to you. As regards a frayed seatbelt, under the terms of the warranty, cosmetic items are not covered. However, a frayed seatbelt may be construed as though it may "fail to function properly during normal use..." In the manual, it clearly states under "SEAT BELT MAINTENANCE" "Periodically check to see that the belt and the metal components such as buckles, tongues, retractors, flexible wires, and anchors work properly. If loose parts, deterioration, cuts or other damage on the webbing is found, the entire belt assembly should be replaced."

DETERIORIATION and DAMAGE IN THE WEBBING, according to Nissan's owners manual, your "entire belt assembly should be replaced." And if it happened during "normal use" you are covered my friend.

Take your car to the dealer armed with this information. The dealership will call Nissan to get approval on the warranty work. If they won't do it, involve Nissan consumer relations. It's been my experience that Nissan generally gives in and pays when you raise hell over a warranty issue. Give it a shot.

Damn this information just made my day. My passenger side auto seatbelt doesnt work and the lap belt is just stuck, it wont pull out at all. Everyone I take for a ride always comments about how ghetto it is. Thanks to drifter for starting this thread.

The warranty booklet, which I have, is great ammunition to bring to the dealer.

The dealers get reimbursed by Nissan for the parts and labor. It's work just as if you were paying them, so that should be incentive enough to call and start the claims process with Nissan. They ARE getting paid.

If they balk at the idea of fixing it for free, don't be afraid to call 1-800-NISSAN-1 and get consumer relations involved. The factory IS on your side, especially when a dealer is misinforming consumers. These belts are absolutely under lifetime warranty.

No. In fact, the seatbelt systems are the only item in these cars that are actually warranted for the useful life of the vehicle. I might add that the Nissan warranty covered ALL seatbelt systems...not just the motorized.

Not even airbags (on vehicles equipped) were covered for life...those fell under powertrain warranty of all things.

I don't know if Nissan still offers that warranty on their seatbelts. I know that warranty was introduced with automatic seat belts in 1988. Did they get rid of it after the belts were phased out in 1994? I know the 1994 Maxima was the last Nissan with motorized belts.

I know the dealer I go to in Baton Rogue keeps the Maxima belts in stock specifically because of all the warranty work they do. My dealer doesn't keep the 240SX ones in stock.

Your dealer may require an appointment and they not have the parts in stock. Be patient! It's free. Until the parts come in, the dealer will crank the motor into the lock position so you can use the belt manually until the parts come in....you can do it yourself too if you want.
