Should be fine if your car is in mechanically sound condition. Guess I-5 isn't too busy where you live.

Yeah if 5th doesn't work it's a common sign that your transmission is bad. My car would pop out of fifth and so I replaced it.. when I took the old one out the input shaft would move about 1 1/2 inches in every direction.. definatly not a good thing. I would think 4th isn't a problem but I would have your transmission checked and if needed replaced.. I got mine for 200$ at a junkyard. Also if your speedo doens't work.. you should probly get that fixed too. heh

Hey man, one time my transmission was bad and my 5th ans reverse didnt work. But I still drove from LA to San Jose, then back again in 4th only. And I was going 80-85 at the most. My speedometer was at 4,500-5,000 if I remember correctly. The point is that your car will be fine. But you need a new transmission or rebuild. I got mine rebuilt. But the shop messed up, so I got it rebuilt for free the second time. But since then my transmission has been fine. PEACE

Not sure, but it's more expensive than a new (errr...previously loved) transmission. It's not hard to find a transmission with decent miles on it. Check junkyards, check our Buy/Sell forums.

next question, about whats the avg. time to change one and do the clutch? i got all the tools and im sure my dad would help me. its just i have no money right now, but if i get a job soon i can get a load and just do the CA18DET swap since its not to much i guess.

heh memories :rolleyes if you have EVERYTHING you'll need, its only a matter of hours, depending on how strong you are and how many buddies you have to help out. if its your first time ever and are totally unprepared like i was it could take you 20 hrs [we timed it ;)] anyway, looking back its a rather easy job but a hell of a work out...

oh, since then ive helped two buddies swap their trannies cuz they were havin the same problems. we did both cars in the same day. we all got ours at a junkyard for $150, had them installed 4 hrs later [with a break for lunch in between] but i dont recommend you drivin it in 4th on the freeway if its giving you crap, just swap it. dont wait till its too late man... good luck

The answer is yes, it is safe to run on the freeway in 4th instead of 5th. In 4th, your engine will be running at a higher rpm, so your gas mileage will drop and you'll hear the motor more. But you should get it looked at. Estimates are ususally free. You should also get the speedo fixed too. That's an inexpensive repair.
