I am tring to trouble shoot my over drive not working and why my car is performing like @$$. Is it controled by a fuse, if so where, like wise for a relay, also if their is a relay, what color so it is easier to find. And I have had mentioned to me that it may be in safe mode. What is safe mode and how do I check to see if it is in safe mode, and if it is in safe mode how do I get it out of it.

did you check the fuse panels under the hood in the little black box? Not for sure on the auto's but check the relays by the pass head light by the battery.

looked at all the fuses, all good, as for the relays, I didn't see any that sounded like they delt with the transmission to bother with. I also looked at the ones inside the car all good. Didn't bother with the ones under the intake cause again I didn't see anything that looked like it pertained to in on the lid.

fail safe system from page EF & EC-25 of a 1989 240sx FSM:

Air flow meter malfunction: if output V is above/below a specified value. The throttle sensor substitutes for the air flow meter. But engine speed is limited to 2400 RPMs while driving to let u know about it.

engine temp sensor malfunction: when its above/below specified value, then it'll be fixed @ a preset value (programmed in the ECU)ignition start/on (68 F) after about 6 min (176 F)

throttle sensor malfunction: when its above/below specified value, the throttle sensor output is fixed @ a preset value.

...now for the auto transmission self-diagnosis procedure Pages AT-30 +

start engine & warm it up to norm engine temp then key OFF1)set od switch ON2)move to P then key ON but engine not running*****does OD OFF indicator lamp com on for about 2 sec?Y= turn key OFFN= goto diag procedure 13) move lever to D4) set OD switch to OFFkey ON but engine not running; wait for more than 2 sec after key is ON5) move lever to 26) set OD switch to ON7)move lever to 18) set OD switch to OFF9) step on gas pedal to the floor & release it10) set OD switch to ONcheck if OD OFF indicator lamp flashes... count the # of flashes as well as the duration of each one.

usually starts in 2.5 sec then a 2.0 sec light-dim fo 1 sec- then flashes on/off fo about 1 sec each time x 10

--**-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- (-pause *light)

if pattern looks like above, then nothing's wrong w/ auto transmission electrical circuits. the circuit that's damaged will flicker a bit longer than the others.

soo if it's like this --**-*-*-**-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-, then check circuit 3 (the throttle sensor is disconnected/shorted out)

if u don't have a steady 10 flicking lights after that 2 sec start light:

like it's flashing on/off ~4x in a sec (battery is low/disconnected fo a long time)

if it stays on (inhibitor switch, OD switch, kickdown switch, or idle switch circuits are disconnected or A/T control unit is damaged.)

I wish I can scanned the pages to you, but my newer pc w/ win98 had a hard drive crash & needs a new 20GB+ replacement (Any PC geeks out there wanna help me out?)

okies, gotta flex my typing fingers for 1 mo reply...

OD OFF indicator lamp flicker is longer than the rest: damaged circuit (short/disconnected)

1st: revolution sensor 2nd:speed senosor 3rd: throttle sensor 4th: shift solenoid A 5th: shift solenoid B6th: overrun clutch solenoid7th: lock-up solenoid8th: fluid temp seonsor disconnected or A/T control unit power source is damaged9th: engine revolution signal10th: line pressure solenoid

I gotz a scanner, just not a win 98 or above pc to send u the many pages of the FSM. some1 else can help u out w/ FSM scans until I replace my hard drive :(

thanks I'll have to try this stuff out after the rain stops. I might have a problem though as my od light never has come on with the button on or off since I purchased it 2 weeks ago. So it might be disconected, or burnt out, or maybe the od is stuck on. Not sure, but I will give this a try.

Or maybe you have a faulty connection going to or from the transmission.

ricebike, I tried that test procedure and as I thought my indicator light never lights up. So I guess it is burnt out, what can I do now?

Just because the light doesn't come on doesn't mean that it is burnt out. If the o/d switch is bad or there is a wiring problem the ecu will never know to switch the light on.

As far as changing the light out, remove the cluster and pull the bulb out. Replace it with a new one or with one that you know works.
