I'm thinking of buying an A'PEXi SAFC. Currently I have a black-top s13 with an AVC-R boost controller. Assuming that the money spent on it is not an issue (ie. "I'd save and buy...") would you guys suggest that I get it? I know that a lot of people have them and a friend said that I should get one but what do you guys think? What are the pros? Thanks in advance.

They have all sorts of cool features but the only really important one is that they are an air-fuel controller. If you plan on putting in some larger injectors, its a must to be able to adjust it.

Also, if you just want to play around with stuff its fun to have. I would buy one simply because its a great product.

they're kind of a band-aid fuel tuning setup. i myself prefer a lot more tuning points and also being able to tune ignition maps, so the Power FC is more of what i'm leaning towards. but for mild upgrades i've seen some decent results using the AFC.

I think I might pick up an old school one (non LCD) to turn down my 550's in my RB20. How far do you want to go with your motor? If you don't want to go much further than mild bolt-ons the SAFC or a used FCON should be fine I would assume.

My setup will get beyond the minor tuning capability of piggybacks. I would look into an Microtech LTX-8 if you want to go with a MAP setup and have flexibility with more complex modifications. I figure by the time I get enough piggybacks to control my required functions, I am at the price of a standalone. I will be running a LTX-12 on my RB20. I will resell the "old school" SAFC since they have leveled off in price, and will probably be worth the same as it was when I bought it.

Hope this helps.

How do you tune with an SAFC? I guess that's what I should have been asking all along.

best way is with a wideband, either on a dyno or buy/borrow one. thats what i did.the techedge unit is under 300$. basically you turn your correction up until you know it's rich, then make a 3rd gear pull at part throttle. look at log.adjust your low throttle correction values .repeat until the line on the log looks right. then do the same thing for full throttle. the AFCII actually has plenty of adjustment points and plug&play settings for different MAFS'.you can download the installation and operation manuals from http://www.apexi-usa.com for more info
