as you all know i already hit a 13.9 at 99 mph with my car. all i had to do was take off the 2 bolts on the flange after the cat and push the cat-back pipe to the side. well a week or 2 ago i got exhaust on my car (magnaflow muffler) and i had the guy cut off my 3rd cat too (he replaced it with a pipe 3" in diameter but after the flange i have 2.5" diameter). so i figured since i hit a really low 13.9 (it was 13.912) that without my 3rd cat i'd hit 13.8 for sure and MAYBE with some luck maybe even a 13.7........ well things didn't exactly go as planned. i did the same exact stuff as i did last time and i kept hitting a 14.1 over and over!!! so my friend's convinced me it's cuz i had no back pressure and that was slowing me down off the line and in my 60ft. so i put the pipe back on at the track and did some runs with my car at street specs and hit a 14.2 all day! could be because it was warmer today then last time but it wasn't hot today. oh ya! i compared my 60ft times and with my muffler off i was still even hitting better 60ft times. so no back pressure didn't negatively affect me. good news is that now i know i can hit a 14.2 with my magnaflow muffler on the streets.

oh and i'm thinking about putting my 3rd cat back on because i don't want to get in trouble for it (police doing a big anti-racer thing over the summer)..... i won a trophy for hitting 14.2 all day lol i was hella consistent with my times (14.2)

Don't forget, it is getting warmer out.

Good luck next time.

Put a stillen sticker on you front left quarter panel. Then try the runs again. I guarantee you will hit 13.7.

Remember though, sometimes they need to be adjusted, like, tilted slightly to get the best tune out of them.

Of course under full acceleration backpressure isn't needed. The concept of backpressure is critical for a daily driver car that is in real life driving scenarios. Your car would run like sh*t if you drove it to the grocery store with 3/4's of the exhaust dissconnected

lol ya i'd NEVER do that! i didn't feel like pulling out the jack and lifting up the car so i just half way backed out of my friend's drive way and disconnected it and drove to the track with it off. it's nice to have that really aggressive sound for about 30 secs and then it gets annoying. it got louder with no 3rd cat and going from 0 to 55 mph going lightly on the gas it was so loud that i couldn't even hear my friend talking lol

but my friends and the guy at the muffler shop were telling me that no back pressure would slow me down big time off the line and that i need a muffler on to help my 60ft. but that's all because my 60 ft was still better. i think my times were bad because it was a lot warmer then last time. i'm going to try and get it tuned to were the check engine light wont come on for no cats and just get electronic exhaust cut-outs before all 3 cats lol that and for it to allow full throttle past 90 mph.

You know thats not your "3rd cat", right? Its the only cat used with driving purposes. The other 2 are whats called "precats". They are only used during startups to prevent the excess exhaust fumes from escaping. Without that 3rd cat on there, you have no filter for your exhaust while the engine is actually running...

The cats aren't the ones stopping the full throttle past 90, so you would be wise to save your money on the cutouts. With your O2 sensors getting no exhaust signal, you car ECU will cut the engine off.

the guy at the shop called it the 3rd cat so that's why i was calling it the 3rd cat..... i heard of pre-cats but never really knew the difference...... ya i know it's the 02 sensor that senses the cats arnt working or not there and then gives you the check engine light but people were saying the recall on our car is because they need to mess with the ECU because we wont get a check engine light for our cats malfunctioning. so that's why i was saying that. and i wanted to mess with the ECU to get rid of the restrictions like the limiter (which ill probably never go that fast anyways) and how the car doesn't allow full throttle past 90 mph.

so your saying that once the car is running that there is no difference between taking off the 3rd cat and taking off all 3 (since the pre-cats are only for when the car starts up)? if so then maybe ill get the exhaust cut-out sooner and just get 1 right before the cat...... i hit a 13.9 before and a 14.1 yesterday and there were only 2 differences that day. the 13.9 was a little colder and i had my cat on. did the cool air make that big of a difference or do you think not having the cat some how slowed me down?

for every 10 degrees colder the ambient air temperature gets you .1 at the track. Good rule of thumb The combination of cooler air and less traction could have been the perfect combo to get your car launched so well. There is such a thing as to much grip. It will bog down your engine if your tires get to much grip off the line with a stock engine.

cat or no cat, which do you think would be faster if the temp was the same?
