At 90K miles I thought it was time to update the shocks on my 90Q. I purchased the blues and much to my disapointment the secure handling and steady ride of the Q has turned into that of a Chevy Citation. Where bumps and potholes were a minor thump previously, they now shake the car. Railroad crossings are no long just a noise underneath. Heaven forbid that I hit a bump in a corner. The Q jumps sideways now. What Have I Done? I guess that's why IOS had them on sale. I have put the fronts I had replaced back on and have some of the quality back. Any ideas on what's going on? Thanks!

The "ideal" setup has been said to be Blues on the rear, OEM on the front. Even then the rears seem a little harsh at first. The theory is that as the rest of the rear end loosens up over time, the blues help to get the rear end back to more like OEM.

Did you replace all of the bushings and rubber components with the new shocks?

I also would suspect other worn suspension components require replacement. Now the slop of the old shocks won't disguise them, they are more apparent to you.

I assure you an all blue ride is quite good. Firm, but in no way jarring.

How many miles have you clocked on your Blues? When I replaced mine, they were really harsh and choppy. Now after a few thousand miles they have definitely loosened up.

The Q is firm enough as it is (uncomfortably so). A worn suspension won't help. When's the last time you replaced all your rubber bushings?

The best mix of ride and handling is... a BMW.

Definitely the blues will get nicer after a month or so... It does take time, ubt the "bump steer" you're describing is not normal

so you have new fronts and newish rears?

if you havent replaced EVERY suspension bushing then all bets are off until you do so...

man if you think a STOCK Q is too firm then you must not have any concern for handling... I just drove a stock Q a few weeks ago with tokicos and it was amazing.. Forgot how nice they are stock!

Never replace shocks in cold weather as the oil inside is temperature sensitive............May June is shock month...........by Fall they will feel normal.

Something I expected everyone to realize, necessary for them to function correctly in 100F heat.

Could you elaborate? I did the blues in the old 94 in Dec 05 (it was cold) and I had no problems. I thought the car rode GREAT. Nice and firm.

I have a set here waiting to go in the 96 (its like riding a seesaw now). Tell me it ain't so... I've never heard that shocks are temp sensitive. The 96 is a 56 degree garage queen--will that suffice???

Whats the deal??

Peter

Yes, stock handling is what I miss. The Q is a 90 HICAS and the shocks I replaced had about 50K on them. All four of the Blues were put on in September and now have about 8K. Handling with all four blues was good as long as the road was totally smooth. Hit a bump and the Q got unnerving. With the old fronts back on I'm almost back to the smooth solid ride with easy to judge handling. I've read that the Tokiko blacks or Monroe Sensa-matics are really much closer to the original control. True? Thanks

Tokico blacks are OEM.

Monroe? Who knows?

If I cared about handling, I'd buy another 5-series. The nose-heavy G50 and its Camry-like balance is offset by its fantastic engine.

E34 > G50

Also, our roads are shaped like this:

---------------------- -- -- -- -- -- ----------------------

Yeah,

I don't drive the Qs for handling either. That's BMW territory (unless you trick up your Q).. I like my Q firm and smooth.

I am surprised you fine the blues "jumpy" I think they are great (at least that last set I put in was).

They give the car a frim surefootedness.

P.
