Hey I'm moving out to Sacramento, California for six months in January for the Nissan Technical School down there. I'm planning to drive my car out there from Chicago Illinois. I got a 1992 coupe 240sx with an Rb20det.

My question is how bad is Police and smog out there about 240's that age?

The car is not very loud as in raspy it just has a very deep sound to it, and than at high RPM's it sounds like a little F1 car or something. I don't know how to explain it, all Rb's sound like that to me.

I got the car with a crazy looking hood and fenders which I'm debating on changing before I come out to CA. I put in most of the interior into it still missing some pieces. And putting a stock looking vibrant sleeper muffler on it as soon as I have time to take it to a welder.

I drive the car pretty calmly no excessive speeding, high shifting, nor street drifting nor dragging. I never really had a problem in Chicago apart from a couple times.

Lemme know and thanks!

Only picture I could find of the front. Kinda sux.

this is more of a regional question

but smog sucks and the cops hate anything with aftermarket parts, they are all illegal actually

alot of people get away with it though

to sum it up.... dont move to CA, its overpopulated and has retarded vehicle registration laws

only one reply damn..... yea I guess it would be regional, just figured I'd get more responses here. Aight well thanks, I don't plan to live in Cali, just stayin for 6 months. I know all aftermarket stuff is illegal unless it has a carb e.o. number, but we get away with it on a daily basis in Chicago. Guess that was my question. But since only one person replied I guess Cali it is. :)

whoa - sorry! Sacramenteans don't sound off very well ;) jk jk

Yes I agree with the LEO comments. Especially with the budget issues (not to say a ticket or 2 will solve the billion dollar deficit), you may find it difficult to get out of a ticket or even find LEO's a little more strict.

Especially if you're coming from out of state... look out for these folks:
http://www.chp.ca.gov/prog/cheaters.cgi
I know you're not trying to establish residency, nor have I heard of people being anal with this program. Like I say: until the CHP actually supply "rewards" for reporting out-of-state plates, nobody is really gonna do this.

I never owned a highly mod'd car, so I can't comment on SMOG & LEO crack downs.
But I do know that SMOG checks may be difficult upon the "visual" inspection. But again - you're not staying permanently, so not an issue.
You're probably already here... so WELCOME to California!
Good luck with your Nissan Tech cert training!

as long as you don't drive like an ***hole, you should be fine. just keep an eye on your rear view to see if there are any cops sniffing at your exhaust

Yes yes thank you I am in California! This place is freakin beautiful! I figured it'd be way warmer tho.... Oh well.

So far no problems with the po-po, so thats good. Thanks for all the help. Yea someone was telling me something about highway sniffers around here and that I should just put my car in neutral and coast trough them, but I have no clue what those are... So I guess I'll find out!

I'm not familiar with the term "highway sniffers" myself.
But if I had to guess, it'd be 1 of 2 possibilities....
  • Mobile SMOG checks: these are coordinated with the city police, and like DUI checkpoints, they can set up an area and require random cars to run through a on-the-spot SMOG check. Usually, just like a DUI checkpoint, they set it up in areas where it is difficult to turn away, or by the time you realize its a SMOG checkpoint, it's too late. They'll even have motorcycle LEO's on standby in case you make an abrupt U-turn to avoid the smog. That's why if you "coast" through it, your engine/muffler drone will not attract their attention
  • City Police or CA Highway Patrol singling you out based on your engine/exhaust noise production: basically, if your car sounds like it's modified, LEO's can create cause to inspect your car (ie. lift your hood) and check for "illegal" modifications. They look for thinks like NOS, turbo, after-market air-intakes, your exhaust system, and I'm sure a bunch of other stuff
I said they look for NOS, but I heard having a NOS hookup is not illegal, but the use of NOS is illegal. What I'm getting at is if it looks like it's not CARB approved, LEO's can require you to go get a SMOG or inspecitions check or something... someone correct me, as I'm regurgitating what I've heard and read. So, this info might be "old" :poke: .

Again, good luck with your NisTech program!!
Maybe before you leave, you can help diagnose some issues I have with my Qx4 and/or my Maxima :P

Dude that s*** is clean. There are alot of jankey a** people out here. I would take another car. People are always trying to steal 240s and Accords out here. Drive a peice of crap, not that :ohno: I suppose it really depends where you move. Roseville, Granite Bay, and Rocklin are all really nice areas, but anywhere else and thats just plain risky.

Naw ain't that clean. Its pretty beat up. And yea I see people lookin at my car alot. I park in a garage with 24/7 security people, I have an alarm and a buncha other lil tricks. I am so damn worried about my car its not even funny, like if I knew bout this s*** before I came here I doubt I'd take my car. I'm just gunna get a pet cougar to chill in my car

Plus I don't see too many people around here with cop plates. Actually I only see cops with those haha, so I think thats enough to spook people.

Yea its ok, no ticket yet, had to replace my damn locks tho... Otherwise I honestly think I brought the Chicago weather with me, rainy windy cold, and someone said something bout snow... If I see construction on the highway and potholes on every street than I'm home haha

I BET YOUR GOING TO UTI! Cops sit out side of the parking lot, they give tickets for not having ca registration if you there for a certain amount of time. I would add more but seem its already covered.
