Im planning on buying a 240 real soon and i want to swap in a SR20DET motor and basically make it as much as a S15 as possible is the '95 the best year to do this with? It is the only year in my price range plus i like the body styling. Im glad i found this forum im 15 and a newbie to this so bear with me. I read lots of magazines and stuff but just recently decided on a 240sx.So any help with this is awesome. By the way were can i buy a SR20 and a full QUALITY S15 conversion kit?

search my man. best advice ever. after u look and are still puzzled. then ask. get the SR first, get it running right and all. then do the outside. maybe ur actually serious too. there is at least one post like this every day "im going to buy a 240 and swap na sr into it :) " and then you find a ****ty 240, stuff breaks. you gotta fix it, etc etc. its harder then u think. unless you're loaded, then its all good and enjoy

look at all the banner ads to the left.there's alot of them that sell SR junk there.you might wanna hold off though...something else will probably be cooler by the time you get a drivers license.

Bro, the s15 conversion costs a lot of money, it's going to be at least 2000 for the kit plus you need to get it painted and then you're probably not going to like the way the car looks with an s15 front and an otherwise stock exterior so you're going to want to get a rear bumper, sideskirts, plus rims and tires, add all of that up and you've got a lot of money plus you're only 15 and you said you can barely afford an s14, so I’m sorry to burst your bubble but honestly I don't see it happening. Instead try to do what matt said, just get the motor and get all the bugs worked out (believe me you're always going to run in to some troubles during an engine swap) and then mod the exterior. That is of course if still having any money left.

Welcome to NICO :)

I suggest buying a 240sx, go to track events and car shows with 240's, get some ideas of what you really want to be driving, THEN decide what you want to do with it.

If your on a budget, I would just give up the plans you have now, because what you want to do will be very expensive. You dont need to have alot of money to have alot fun in a 240sx. :)

lol what's up with the tarp covered wagon? lol

yeah, these guys know what they're talkin about. I remember when I bought mine like 2-3 years ago and I figured meh so what about high mileage I'm just gonna swap an SR in there and be done with it...>>fast forward 2-3 years later (now)>> my SR is now sitting in a garage getting some of the finishing touches done on it, not installed and hell not even bought until about a year ago. Things come up and alot of 240's are getting old (but aging well!) and replacement parts are loads of cash man. The SR is a good goal to work towards, but get the car first and get it back to spec (possibly upgrading those parts replaced) and trust me you'll have alot more fun with it than if you just tossed an sr and a s15 face on it.

Thanks guys your the coolest. Im going to take your advice and buy the '95 240 and then performance comes first(i planned on this anyways). then once im satisfied, if ever, ill start on show stuff. ALL SHOW AND NO GO SUCKS. i noticed that one guy said a '95 was an s14 so what years are s15?? i looked at 98 240s and they average about 10k! lol good goal to go for though thanks again guys.

yeah man the 97 and 98 s14's look pretty damn cool with their front end...reminds me of a boxed out version of the s15's front end but yeah. the s15's started in 99 and have either ended their production run or going to stop pretty soon.

s15 production in japan ended long ago. they never made it to the states. 98 is the newest 240sx you can get. 97 and 98 's come with kouki lights(the sharp looking ones).

btw, if you were rich, why not? but seeing that your on a budget(and have no job and will not for a long time), just buy a beater car. no need to buy a fast car in the begining. and i cant emphasis this enough, but your only 15. just chill

i know that rbmotoring has s15 motors with zero miles on'em.

but just get the car first, do the maintenace and im sure that will set you back a good amount. then suspension will also murder your wallet. but a car project does take a really long time, unless yer rich of course :p

does rbmotoring got a site, if so can you link me? And are these S15 SR20DET's Hella expensive? :rolleyes

BTW Katz I went through 3-4 cars (just looking a deciding what i liked the most etc) within a year before i finally chose the 240 sx... so make sure it's what you want before you go dumping your cash all into it (especially if it's gonna be your daily drive)

i decided on a '95 240 and i already got a job at McDonalds which sucks so bad. i work my *** off for 5.25 an hour. I have about 1000 bucks already and ill have another 2k by the end of this summer. I plan on pulling the engine, sell it, buy a SR20DET, then keep it out of the engine bay for awhile while i have it all fixed up. Performance is always first cause i dont want to be made a fool of in my "show car". Thanks all you guys for your help. Im glad i found this forum it really helped. By the way i know RWD - Rear Wheel Drive. And i have my permit as i said in my first post so obviously im driving.

So why exactly do you want an SR? Have you driven an SR powered 240? Or how about a KA powered 240? I just think it's funny that you already know what you want....yet you don't have a car....nor can you drive legally...

Oh yeah, there's a difference between knowing what RWD stands for, and knowing how RWD handles under adverse conditions.

Now I'm not trying to be a prick here but seriously, you think you know you want....you think you can handle the power of an SR, but chances are, you haven't even driven a 240SX yet. I think you should buy the car, drive it with the KA in it for a while (at least 6 months) so you can get the feel for the car. Then upgrade.

linja is right on. ive had my car for over a year now, and maybe in 3 more years of auto-x and some track time i will know my car. ive seen great miata drivers come within 1 sec of a Z06's time, running suspension and some sticky tires (this is on a relativeyl small course, but the Z06 driver is a SCCA regional champ). so yea, learn, and then learn more, and then review and learn again. there's so much to learn about any car in stock form. when u upgrade, its just gonna be harder to learn. find your limits, push them, then upgrade and push more.

Dont forget that your still young man. Having alot of power with a RWD could get you killed quick. I guess im like you, got my 95 240 as my first car. This summer, ill do suspension. Ill go for more power after I can really drive my car.

this may be a stupid question but down the road i was planning on rebuilding my ka24 from the bottom up and adding a turbo kit i figured the internals around 2k and the turbo kit 2500-4500 depending what i wanted to do. Would it be cheaper to get a brand spanking new s15 sr20 and swap it in

It depends on who's installing it; you or a shop. I believe S15 SRs go for around $5500-$6000.
