Alright, I've searched high and low and I couldn't find an answer that I felt was fitting.. I understand how the differential works and how the gear ratios work (i.e. the lower the ratio the higher the top speed but slower accel and vise versus).

What I want to know is if/when I get an S15 helical, will the ring gear that is attached to it, mesh with the pinion in my open diff? I know there will need to be shimming done and what not, but I plan to have a shop set it up for me anyway. I know they came with 2 or 3 different ratios (3.69, 3.9 and 4.1?) which is fine with me as I'd like a lower final drive as it is. So if anyone knows, please share the wealth. Thanks in advance, Glenn.

check the numbers stamped on the side of the gear.

The numbers are A48:13 then some little markings afterwards, but can't tell really...

Are you talking about getting a full Helical LSD? Or just the ring gear/ pinion? Because if you -just- want a different final drive ratio, you can just swap the ring gear and pinion and it doesn't have to be from an S15. If you want the full Helical LSD setup, you will need to get a diff and output shafts. The S15 LSD innards -will- fit in the R200 (stock usdm 240) case.

In general, if you are swapping the ring gear, you will want to swap the pinion to one that matches. Ive seen jimmy-rigged diffs with mismatched ring/pinions blow up at race tracks Watching low budget dirt-track is fun!

So, will the ring gear will work with my stock pinion gear which is from a an open differential? It's going to be installed by a shop so backlash will be taken care of.

ISUJinx - I plan on getting the entire differential, no point in putting a differen't ring gear on if I still have an open diff..

Main thing I wanted to know was if that ring gear will work with my factory pinion...

3.9:1 is the j30's ratio. You may want to consider using a j30 pinion.

Are the pinion's a direct swap?

I may be wrong but I have always seen ring and pinions sold as a set for a given gear ratio. If you were to replace a ring gear with the same ratio you may be able to get away without changing part of the set.

As I understand it the ring gear has the same outside diameter regardless of ratio. They cut the teeth on the gears differantly on the ring and pinion so they can get the desired ratio. Your old pinon may fit into the S15 ring gear but may have exces play or poor contact. best to just swap them in set.
