I bought a rebuilt moded bb s15 turbo with 3k since the rebuild from this guy I know. Now it probably has arround 10-15k on it and it looks like the seals are going out. My car smokes after I give it boost then let off and the hot pipe has a bunch of oil in it. I never ran the turbo over 12 psi. Anyone have any suggestions of what I should do. I took the turbo off last night and it still spins great and has minimal shaft play. the only thing I could see is oil in the hot side and the inlet side. Anyone's 2 cents would be great. Thanks

as far as i know, garrett doesn't offer rebuild kits for ball bearing turbos. It's been about a year since I inquired them about a BB rebuild kit, so maybe they finally started offering them.

as far as your password, I'll tell greg what's going on if nobody else has.

A rebuild for a bb consists of buying a new centersection. This is usually about 80% the price of a new turbo.

I don't think the entire turbo is bad though. Is there any way to just replace the seals and get it rebalanced?

Ask a place like Majestic turbo, I was told in the past by a local turbo rebuild company that the ball bearing turbos cannot be rebuilt, having something to do with the cartridges not being able to be taken apart. If you cannot take the cartridge apart then you cant get to the seals.

i've always heard the same. BB turbos can't be rebuilt. I think it's mainly to do with the fact that the bearings are pressed in instead of drop in like you see with journal bearings

EDIT: Grambos, email me. I have a new password for you, but the email you have listed in your profile was bounced back to me.

Is there any way to convert a ball bearing turbo to the standard journel type...As you can see I am trying to avoid having a $350 paper weight. How much is the turbo worth if I tried to sell it with the bad seal?

Converting a turbo to journal would cost about the same as buying a new ball bearing centersection. Basically the only useful parts of that turbo you bought are the compressor and turbine housings. When bb centersections go, they are toast. If you try to sell that turbo, you will know that you are selling a blown turbo that cannot be rebuilt. Just depends on your integrity.

These are your choices for new centersections...

Thanks for that chart speed racer. Where would I order a new center section from and how much do you think it would cost to pretty much make my turbo the gt28rs? What would you do in this situation? I think for now I am going to order a rebuild kit for my t25 for $75 and run that untill I figure out what I want to do. It sucks because I have had this t28 for a while now and I just finally got my engine up to par where I can start pushing a safe 15 or 16 lbs.

Try emailing majestic for prices on the centersections. The main issues you would run into is that you would have to buy the compressor and possibly exhaust housing too depending on the trim of the wheels. Or you could try to bore out the T28 compressor housing.

actully the turbo I have has allready been boared out on the compressor housing...I took the turbo apart last night and saw that the seal arround the compressor ball bearing was in 4 peices. It looks like it wasn't even the problem though. The main problem was the seal in the exhaust side that was burning a bunch of oil. Not like this helps me out at all by knowing this but it is nice to know what the problem is. I'll keep you guys posted on what I decide to do. From the looks of the diagrams it looks like you can just buy a re-build kit for a journle type s14 t28 and convert it but...

You guys say its not really possible to convert a ballbearing turbo to a journel type. we'll see cause I ordered the rebuild kit tonight and I am either going to convert my t28 to journel or rebuld my t25 whatever is easiest.
