i got in my car going to town the other day and when it was idling at a redlight i noticed this loud high pitched whine. i thought it was the abs pump but it goes away once i let off the clutch and the car starts rolling. and a little later cruising at about 2300 rpm i noticed a knocking sound. it kinda sounds like it is coming from the engine but it only does it from 2-3500 rpm under light load and sitting still. when it starts making that sound i can give it more throttle and the noise goes away. could this be coming from my transmission? like it got low on fluid(has a leak) and burnt a bearing(high pitched whining noise) and messed a gear or syncro up(knocking noise)?

anyone?
i don't want to rip the engine out and it be something with the transmission. and i don't want to take and have the transmission rebuilt when it is something in the engine. the engine only has 7k on it. so i hope its not that

No clue, located the noise and report back. You can use a wooden dow or a stick. Hold it against the motor trans until you can find the noisy area. Maybe its time to check all your bolts, change fluids and give it a full once over.

quick question... if it was a loose rod cap or something in the valve train it would get worse at higher rpm. correct? the whining noise only happens after i drive a few miles.

okay. I got a set of bunny ears "stethoscope" and it sounds like it is coming from the upper timing chain cover. i removed the timing chain guides, so its not that. could it be the upper timing chain tensioner?

okay. so my step dad drove my car before it started doing it.. and he just told me that it was really low on oil (3 1/4 quarts) could it have fried the main or the rod bearings?

FOUND ITTT!!!! it was the little pcv valve baffle thing that is in the front cover. the little screws came out and the baffle was just kinda chilling there on the timing chain and scaring the crap outta me.

okay. so i lied. i got it back in and filled up with fluids. cranked it. revved it to 2600 and its STILL clattering. i am about _ this close to holding it to the floor till it dies and swapping an sr. someone help! haha could it be the lower timing chain guides since i didn't use genuine Nissan guides? or maybe the oil pump is broke on the inside? but oil pressure is good, so i dont think its that. could it be my eGheyyyy XTD pressure plate? it has a perfection clutch disk. maybe a clutch spring is bad? how can i test it?

nope coming from the engine/clutch area. only from 2000 to 3500 rpm. gets worse as the car heats up. only under light load (cruising) or sitting still revving the engine. oil pressure is good

Kat. Can yield more power but I myself would never go back. Sr's are way easy to work on and I've done one rebuild in 7 years (rings on a 80k motor on full boost all day everyday ) this is after granading my stock la with regular 3,000 mile oil changes

idk what it is about ka and not liking rod bearings... but the noise was a spun bearing and it finally went out completely and she decided to spit the number 1 rod out of the block and leave a nice hole in her place...... anyone got a ka block for sale?? or maybe a s14 sr swap? (:

I just did the same thing to mine. I haven't driven it yet since the knocking started. It was low on oil just like yours. How hard is it to replace the rod? Obviously I need to get in there and check it out first. I wanted to do an SR swap anyway and was kinda trying to figure out if I would be wasting a lot of time/money on fixing this when I could be saving for an SR. I have another car as a DD so I'm not too worried about getting it back on the street right away.

just save for a sr swap the KA is just a b**** and not as good.If you have a daily then you need a race car lol SR swap it because if you spun the bearing then u need to get your crank either polished if there is no damage at all, or get it cut down at a machine shop, then need to get the rods cut and honed so everything is true and back to spec. then buy bearings to fit, full engine gasket set and might as well do rings if its apart so you will have about 350-500 maybe more depending on how much the machine shop charges you to cut everything, my sr spun a bearing and i got it all back together rods cut crank cut and polished with bearings 220 total.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll save up for the SR, I should have the money in 2 months or so.

Before you go on a couple of opinions based on individual experiences, search around (this site and elsewhere) and educate yourself about the engines, their differences, do's and dont's, capabilities, parts availabilities (junk yards, new and upgrades), etc. Read this as it's pretty informative as well: ca-vs-ka-vs-sr-vs-rb-shut-up-and-read-t277463.html Sometimes swapping is NOT the right thing to do (be it financially or mentally) ... Everyone I've ever known that opts to swap the KA out for the SR either doesn't know how to build up the KA or simply wants a drop in engine or that JDM status rights thang. For me, it's like telling a V8 guy to swap out his 396 for a 350 ... less displacement/less potential. Just build the KA right with consideration for boost. Again, "my" experiences and you should do what makes you comfortable. I have nothing against the SR engine other than it's lower displacement to the KA. Just build whatever right and either way, good luck! :yesnod

*edit* ... Also, adding-a-turbo-to-a-stock-ka24-noobs-read-t226410.html
