OK sunday morning i was driving to work and it was dark out and i was doing about 45 the i take my eyes off the road for one second, to turn the defroster off, then i hit, and kill, a huge dog. The 240 has a cracked front bumper broken turn signal and broken fog light-looks like it is time for a silvia front end.

my friend hit a dog in his brand new STi last week. tried to miss it, but still hit it. drove off the road, flipped it twice and knocked down a telephone pole.Broke his leg and fractured 2 ribs. The car wasnt in good shape either

^^ thats why for small animals i hit my brakes and keep it strait. Id much rather the dog die than me or my car. I dont care what the critics say, my life and my car is worth more to me than that dog's.~Sam

There was no blood but lots of hair stuck in the bumper. I could not find the owner and i wasn't going to touch it to get the tags, but who evers dog it is probably has my inner fender, so hopefully the cant trace it back to the only 240sx in town

that's really sad bro..

you should have atleast pulled over and called animal control or something?

I mean, if it wasn't dead from the impact then it probably died because of the injuries(sp)

it must have been a slow death.

oh, it definatly did not die slow i'm petty sure it died instantly. The dog did 1600 dollers worth of damage to my s14 however.

Sucks to hear about the dog. I hope it did die instantly instead of suffering.

As for the car, if you have physical damage coverage on your car you can claim "hitting an animal" under your comprehensive. Check with your agent, but in many states and for many companies comprehensive losses won't have an effect on your premiums and as long as you don't have a history or accidents or tickets, your company shouldn't cancel you for one comprehensive loss.

Anyway, if you have full coverage check with your agent and see if he/she thinks it would be worthwhile to file a claim.

As Dookie's account as example, it's a lot better to stay straight and brake as fast as you can to reduce damage then try to swerve and miss it(unless its feasible and your'e not going that fast).Honestly, the dog could have belonged to no one, if an irresponsible owner lets their dog roam the streets its only a matter of time before they get hit. Its not your fault, but the owners should have been contacted if the animal had tags. You can't be held responsible for your actions, you were just driving, so they can't hold you accountable for anything unless you so choose to help them out (if the animal survived that is).

yeah, i learned my lesson dodging dogs, dodged a rotweiller going about 70 down the highway, rolled my cherokee.

was one of those instictive reactions to swerve to miss,

From my exp, and just reading cenjack's post is if you see an animal in the road and you are going real fast, don't try to swerve. It may sound really mean, but my friend had an almost new 325 bmw and swerved to aviod hitting a rabbit and totalled his car...
