I have a 96 S14 with an S14 notchback SR and it's got the dreaded VCT intake cam disel truck noise.....

Gonna be biting the bullet here in a couple of day's and ordering the VCT cam sprocket from Phase2motortrend, can anyone here on Nico shoot me your experiences in removing and installing the VCT sprocket plz??

Or any experiences with the VCT intake cam sproket out of an s14sr or s15sr plz?

Any info will be greatly appreciated, I have done my research and am pretty well versed and even have the S14 Silvia FSM, but getting first hand experiences from people that have been there and done that would also help me out tremendously.

Not quite sure what you're looking for, besides a step-by step guide I guess. It's not very hard to do, I haven't replaced mine, but it seems pretty straight-forward.

- Remove coil pack cover plate if you have it on there.- Pull your coil packs, and tuck them back out of the way.- You'll want to remove the pcv and both breather hoses from the valve cover.- Unplug the CAS plug and the BOV re-circ pipe if you have that.- There are a bunch of 10mm nuts with rubber grommets and metal retaining washers all around the valve cover. Remove them, and don't worry if the whole stud comes with it, it will go back.- Lift off the valve cover, the gasket will stay on the head, as it's rtv'd in place.- Note/mark your timing marks, and zip-tie the chain to the exhaust cam gear.- Remove the hydraulic tensioner located on the block below the intake cam side.

Now this is the part that I don't know, as I haven't done it before. Not sure if you have to remove the cam, or if you can just remove the cam gear.- There's a bolt that bolts the cam gear onto the cam.- If you remove this, the gear may slide right off.- If you have to remove the cam, just loosen the retainers along the cam, and watch that you don't knock any rockers or valve shims, etc. into the head.- Replace the gear.

Then you just reassemble.- Not sure if you can put the chain on the gear then the gear on the cam, or gear on the cam then chain on the gear, etc.- The cam gear will align itself on a dowel, just remember to tighten the cam bolt once it's on there.- Make sure the rockers are sitting correctly, and tighten the retainers from the inside-out I believe, refer to the FSM for the pattern and torques.- Obviously remember to have the chain back on the gear, and make sure the timing marks are lined back up.- You'll have to reset the hydraulic tensioner by holding the little "lock" open (You'll see the ridges and lock on the tensioner), depressing the tensioner, and hooking the little hook onto the pin.- Place it back into the block, and make sure the hook can fall downwards when it releases.- If everything seems to be lined up, tighten the tensioner until it releases. If ii doesn't release (You'll hear it), rotate the crank pulley with a socket until it does.....it'll do this pretty fast.- Cut the zip-tie.- Replace the valve cover, torque the nuts correctly, hook up your lines.- Plug in the CAS, re-route the BOV re-circ, etc.- Make sure everything is hooked back up, and you're done.- Crack a beer, and remember anything stupid you might have done before starting the engine.- Try it out.

Tell me about it, my diesel sounds turned out to be a kinked timing chain link.I just finished stripping the engine bay to pull the motor.Early re-build time I guess......

I'll post a thread up when I get a chance.
