--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I purchased a 1995 240sx that has been sitting underneath a tree for about 4 years now. I talked to the last person who drove it and they said everything worked properly when it was parked. Besides the live rats living in the engine compartment, it looks really nice after the first cleanup. Much to my surprise after putting a jump box on it it fired right up. I turned it off immediately so that I could change the fluids before really running the car. Changed the fluids, and poured in some fresh gas and started it, letting it run for a few minutes and get up to temperature, the AC works and all of the guages except for the gas gauge. I went to move it out for a test drive and it wouldnt go anywhere when I let out on the clutch. Since the throttle cable was frozen I figured maybe that the slave cyl. might be as well, but I checked it and it moves back and forth just like its suposed to. After trying more gears I got it to move slightly in reverse, but it wont go anywhere now except in 4th gear. Any idea's? The slave moves just as it's supposed to so I suppose I will have to try and pull the transmission, but what should I look for? Thanks in advance for your help.

How does it not move. Does the clutch feel like its slipping?

no, the clutch pedal feels soft but I regularly drive a 240sx with a performance clutch so it may just seem soft to me. You can put it in any gear and it goes no where.... as a matter of fact, I just went out and tried again and it wouldnt even move in forth gear at first, then as I pumped the pedal and went through the gears again it started to move in 4th again. The clutch does not feel like its slipping because I accidentally popped it out while in 4th gear and the tire spun very briefly. I am parked in very loose gravel. The clutch grabs for sure, just not in the other gears lol.

I was told that the car was parked for about 2 years at one lot, then the business moved and they had to move it to their new location and they drove it there. I spoke with the guy who drove it and he said it drove fine, all he had to do was jump start it, and they drove it about 8 miles to the new location, all gears working normally.

Just to clarify because I may retarded or something, by "move in gear" you mean it the car receives no power while in a particular gear or it refuses to shift IE the shifter does not move into the position of a gear?Perhaps the hydrolic system needs a bleeding or something? Check transmission fluid level? What have you checked so far specifically besides the slave cylinder?

*UPDATE*

I jumped into the car and was trying to get it to move and put it into 4th gear and started letting the clutch out to rock the car back and forth, after a few rocks, I put it into reverse and it grabbed and out I went, I put it into first and drove it out of the parking lot, normal gear changes, pulled up to a light and sat waiting. When I went to pull away, nothing again, no gears at all, not even 4th. Then I kept pumping the pedal and putting it into 4th and finally it grabbed again, I had to launch the car i 4th, but once I got rolling again, the gears worked normally. I drove it around for just a few minutes more not wanting to get too far away from my shop and I even got it to bark a second gear nicely. I pull up to another light and it dies again. I go through the process again, pumping etc. til it grabs and I have to launch in 4th gear again. I made it back to the shop and in front while I was waiting it died again. By the way, when it dies, you can put it right into gear without the clutch, no grinding or anything. WTF is going on here? LOL

Sounds like some serious power train issues. Probably why no one drove it for so long. How much did you pay for it btw?

It sounds like the clutch is getting stuck in the disengaged position. The throwout bearing may be getting stuck or it could actually be the pressure plate. Either way it sounds like youare going to end up dropping the transmission.

I actually know the person who owned it, they have no reason to lie to me. It drove perfectly before it was parked. Since I am selling it, I cannot disclose what I paid for it ;)

I think yellow jacket might have the answer. I will try driving it some more and see if it will magically cure itself, if not I guess I will drop the transmission this weekend.
