Once I got pulled over and got my hood popped. (I have KA-T and live in Southern California). He said something about my manifold and called one of my intercooler pipes a "cold air intake", and he didn't do anything.

I have a bottom mount so you can't see the turbo unless you tried.

Stock SR intercoolers are dinky. Just run a FMIC and paint it black...

but can the stock intercooler run well as a daily driver? or is it not big enough because if i go turbo ill only run it at a stock level(~8lb boost) maybe look for a different exhaust that doesnt look so big

Haha. Cannot believe somebody saying stuff like "stock intercooler run well as a daily driver..."

Nissan did not, and does not build a car so you can change every single part of it. Silvia made 200/220/250 for a reason: Skyline. Not so you can add a boost controller and say the smic is a piece of crap.

i gust read your post you just got busted..hella sucks...well i live in no cal and i will not get busted for my exhast so if i can hide the intercooler i think im ok as long as i dont drive out of my area...i live in the mountains with paved streets lol....so the big 4x4 turbo diesels do get pulled over and they got stack pipes hella loud and black smoke everywhere....kind of ugly but as long as you aren't dui or speeding there really isnt much popo problems

This might sound kind of dumb but I'm curious, I'm from Missouri and we can pretty much mod our cars to our hearts content. We have a safety inspection where they just check for break pad/rotor life, worn out axles that sort of thing.

if I'm in CA with my car for whatever reason, and a cop sees my exhaust and pulls me over on suspect of illegal mods, is there anything he can ticket me for? My gut would say no as it's legal where the car is registered, but I don't know for sure.

i dont think they can do anything since your car is registered in a different state and your just visiting and not living in California

Law states you have 10 days to get CA plates. They won't f*ck with you as much as they do with cars with CA plates, but they still can if they want to.

my nephew got caught a couple of years back when he had his t3 set up on his ka. the turbo was a z31 t3 that wrote NISSAN on it. the cop didnt know anything so he assume the car was stock turbo and my nephew didnt get a ticket for his ka-t.

for now, i'm done at least until I get it smogged in December. But maybe i'll have the itch to go back. As of right now I just feel it's not worth the hassle dealing with cops, fines and CA in general. My Calstate University tuition just went up 400 bucks per quarter so I'm gonna have fun with that also...CA is AWESOME!!!

a year ago, I got pulled over by CHP.

He asked me to pop my hood (I have a stock SR redtop, w/ stock everything except an HKS filter)... after looking at my engine bay for about 5 minutes while scratching his head, he told me to close my hood and go about my way (after he asked if I had a catalytic converter).

but not everyone is as lucky as I was. Cops are getting smarter and knowing what's what nowadays.

apparently teddy has had some decent luck with his sr also and look at his car it looks like a full on drift car lol

stock sr looks legit but if you get caught you're effed with an engine swap

ka-t's don't look legit with tubular manifolds and what not, but it's pretty easy to swap back to stock. You're usually just effed if you pop the hood unless it's really stealthy.

but a heavily modded sr20/rb/ca/etc. and you're just effed all around

If it hasn't happened already, nissans are most likely going to become the new hondas with the engine swap crack downs so it's time to get that stock looking exhaust tip and that blacked out FMIC

yes and no... the main reason why cops were cracking down on Hondas and their motor swaps was due to theft being very predominate in that make. Their engine swaps are still legal as far as c.a.r.b. went, but a lot of the engines found were reported stolen.

idk why cali guys mess with swaps or cars that are underpowered from factory

either get a factory turbo'ed car (evo sti) or get a classic or soon to be classic.

if i lived out there id rock a 510 or z any day.

and rust is not as big of a factor

If you still live in mt. shasta area I wouldnt worry to much. If you live in small town then cops are usually more relaxed bout modding cars.

Besides if you are that tripped out about being pulled over just throw in a SR and keep all the oem plastic s*** and smic. Or make a ka-t ultra sleeper status such as bottom mount log mani with heatshield, side mount intercooler, stock sr intake pipe and filter box, etc. etc. etc.
