Ok, so i have a 96 zenki with 114,500 miles and it is making the famous noise from the front of the engine. My brother works at chevy and he knows a mechanic at nissan. He called his friend and asked about my car. The mechanic said no way would he remove the guides and leave the chain flopping around like that. He has a frontier and just did the whole timing chain on it. He says i should do the same. So now I am royally confused and need to know what is right. So what should I do about this issue. The bad thing is the job gets 15.6 flat rate hours

Thanks

-Darren

Remove the upper guides and replace the tensioner. My chain still makes a little noise at startup, but i'm almost 100% sure it's because my tensioner is old and needs a little more oil pressure built up before it takes up any slack in the chain.

I would remove it. On the single cam engine, the guide wore out and broke in pieces and ended up in the oil pan.... after some hard driving on a hot summer day, the plastic melted and traveled up to the valvetrain. It then solidified back and ended up clogging some of the oil paths going to the rockers/cams. BAD BAD BAD stuff.
