Just bought a 89 240 with a blown blacktop sr20. I'm rebuilding the engine and trying to find out exactly what year the engine is(is it possible with the seial number?) and what the turbo is from. I was told it was an HKS turbo before I bought the car. After looking closely at the turbo and the tag on the turbo, I think its from an earlier s13 engine. My engine has the slanted valve cover at the rear. so its newer than that. I want to know why that turbo would be on that engine. The guy I bought it from bought the car with the swap already done, so he has no idea. Please help.

Usually if it's an HKS turbo, you'll see their tag riveted to the front of the turbo.

Slanted valve cover will be an s14/15. Got a pic of the turbo?

maybe they had a better condition turbo on that s14 and when they sold it, they didn't want to part with that turbo and thus bought one as cheaply as possible that would work.

Crap, thats what I was thinking. That means I have to buy a turbo. Any suggestions? I'm rebuilding the engine close to stock, i don't want to got too big or too expensive. After i'm done it will still be a daily driven car.

well you could probably get the turbo rebuilt. too big or too expensive, will be any turbo past oem for the most part since you'll need an ecu, injectors, mafs, fpr, and other supporting parts. I'd suggest either 1. rebuild the turbo or 2. buy one from someone dumping their t25 or a t28 (probably cheapest route)

A GT2560R or the oem version of this turbo from the S15 are good choices. They are basically the same thing except the S15's has a divider between the exhaust turbine and the wastegate flapper.
