S14 SR20DE VTC question

I have S14 SR20DE RWD engine(JDM). It has the VTC and I'm wondering how this system works, what activates it? I'm swapping this engine into a 1967 Datsun roadster. Do I need the speed sensor from an S14 gauge cluster for the VTC to work? Can the engie run fine without the VTC?

the vtc is a very important function for the engines performance. the vtc the variable timing is genrally not determined by speed but engine load and throttle request. so you should not need the speed sensor to operate it. but not having the speed sensor for the engine control unit may create other performance issues.
