Ok this is a friends car that Im going to work on but I need some help as I never really messed with 240's Im mostly a Honda/Toyota guy.So he has a 89 240sx coupe with a S14 SR20DET in it. The car is a wiring nightmare, Im talking every wire is just twisted together and taped . His cluster doesnt even work . But any way the car was running fine, I made a new down pipe and it was running great untill he "was forced to run into a puddle of water" and the car bogged and cut off and wouldnt start back up. Well I went yesterday and I saw his oil return line was kinda melted so I thought maybe some water got in? Changed oil & redid the return line found the alternator & started unplugged so plugged them back in and started the car. The car starts right up but idles like crap. I checked each coil and they all have spark but the car seems to be in safe mode were it wont rev out and the redline is like at 2500-3500 ? My question is , How do pull codes ? Do I pull it the same way for the original 240 single cam ? Am I wrong to think its a sensor/electrical issue ?

If it's not revving over 2500, I'm gonna say he sucked some water into the intake and screwed the MAF up. Get a new MAF. A SOHC KA MAF should work on an S14 SR IIRC.

As for pulling codes, I don't remember if the S14 SRs pull the same was as S13s. I think you need to have it wired up to run on a consult.

I don't have any experience with S14 SRs, so I'm not 100% certain.

I'm going to assume that he had the ECU reflashed to handle the Z32 MAF since it was running fine at one point.

Z MAFs are not a simple drop in affair. The plugs are different, so you have to do some rewiring to make it work. http://www.heavythrottle.com has a how to on wiring the Z MAF in.

The ECU has to be told what kind of airflow meter you're using. The stock S13/S14 MAF is the same as SOHC KA MAF. However, if the ECU was reflashed to handle the Z MAF, you won't be able to slap a stock MAF back in place.

The Z MAF requires some rewiring to work, and you've already mentioned that his wiring was in question anyways. I would double check his wiring job, and make sure it was done properly. If he just twisted some wires together and taped them up, he's just asking for something to go wrong. Especially with something like the MAF.

yeah its reflased by XAT Racing who built and owned the car but now he has it.. There was never a problem with the maf before but now that I ask him he said the water was deep enough to get sucked in a bit. He has the Mmaf on the turbo so its easy to pull out Im thinking about cleaning it and seeing if it works. Main question is how to reset the ecu ??? I disconnected the battery for an hour and its still the same. I cant even pull code.

I was gonna try that today. I got some MRC maf cleaner at home. Well on a Honda you can just unplug the battery for 30 seconds & it clears , on my G35 its like 10 min any idea how long it takes ?

Step on break pedal or turn lights on to drain battery so there is no juice left.

Now I know to add some sort of splash plate to guard mine...as if it rains too much in Atlanta anyway...

well the problem is its completely open to the ground. My G35 is all covered up with a splash shield and it even bolts on to my greddy front bumper
