IS the fluting in the lenses built in to the lense? In other words if you pop the lense off can you feel the fluting on the inside or is it smooth on the inside?

They are not smooth. The rivets are are felt on the inside of the lenses along the fronts and the sides.

I think I had the same Idea you did as well, If you want to get them smooth. You may not, its alot of work. I did it to my taillights and after about a week of sanding and a day of novus 3 step acrylipolish I got all the divots off. I am sure you could do the same with the headlights if you try. Be gentle, you will crack them if you push to hard. And use lots water.
