s14 having a really hard time starting

every time i try to start my s14 it sounds like it wants to turn over but it wont..im lost!!!! i work on this car almost every weekend and i thought i knew it from the inside and out..well i guess not..it makes a grinding noise when i try to start it and t will keep doing it and eventually the car starts but if i dont hit the gas right away it dies on me..??????someone plz help
