I'm planning on buy a new car and there is 97 240 for sale that i've been thinking about buying. 5000 bucks.

The Bad - the transmission and engine both seem pretty worn out already and its only got 75k miles on it. also I can tell the paint is starting to fade just a little on the roof. not an SE

The Good - the interior is super clean, I couldn't find anything wrong with it. the body is pretty nice too, no damage or rust anywhere. it has power windows and doorlocks and its a 5 speed.

does this sound worth the price? also I live in Tennessee if that might matter.

also this will be my daily driver after everything is back to good condition

Doesnt sound like to bad of a deal. Depending on how bad the transmission and engine is though.

i think its a pretty good deal if you dont mind doin quite a bit of maintenance when you get it, find out exactly what is wrong with the engine and transmission and see how much it costs to fix it before you buy it, if it's possible.

240s dont come with sr's they come with ka24de or ka24e and you can find the engine from $100 to $2000 depends on if you buy rebuilt or used. If youre comfortable putting in another engine and transmission go ahead.

oh, no sorry for the confusion. I was just thinking about swapping in a sr if the motor and transmission were already in pretty bad shape

One other thing. What is your current emission laws where you live. I try to bring this up because we have to do emmisions on 96 and up. So 97 here in my part of NC would be a bad ideal for swap. If it doesnt matter/apply, then never mind.

Just trying to save some heart ache.

I've never heard of any kidn aof emissions laws in Tennessee, if there are any they are very slack. I'm not concerned about emmisions, but thanks for bringing it to my attention. its something im gonna have to check out, just to make sure.

wait wut makes you think that the transmission and engine are worn out? have you seen the car or is this what the seller tells you? seems like a steal since im looking at a 96 base 240sx for 5500ish and thats with 110k miles on it. But of course im out in Cali so the prices are inflated. anyways good luck.

Let me know what you guys think about it. I am going to go and look at it today if the moron that has it for sale is at his office for a change!

Also, if any of you are nice(cool) enough to give a gimp like me a free Carfax report, here is the VIN : JN1AS44DXVW102903

I looked at it and it said that there were 7 reports on it... I dont know if this is a good or bad thing. Thanks for your interest!

dude i bought a 95 for 8 grand, but its in great condition w only 30,000 miles.

see if u can get it cheaper...u can always drop in a sr, or rebuild the engine and get a newer transmission then turbo it.

Finally got to take it for a drive! A friend and I both drove it around abit. the transmission was a little loose but not near as bad as I had heard. also the only things that really seemed wrong with the engine is that it idled at a steady 2k and had some salt corrosion. it definitly needed an alignment and some of the interior pieces rattled pretty bad

I'll probably go back later this week and take it for another spin. hopefully push it a little harder.

edit** that queer pinkish/purpleish/reddish graphic and pinstripe will be the first "modification" :D

Nice find. Looks to be in good visual condition. I'd say worth it, pending a test drive and mechanical assessment.

The pics gave me wood up until I saw the side... =\Buy it unless it's running on 3 cylinders and is missing 2 gears. Even then, buy it and fix it. Then go Turbo KA. Then give it to me.

I really hope the paint hasn't faded noticably when I take it off though, otherwise it will look like I still have it on(minus the queer colors) :(

Holy cat testes batman, it idles at 2 grand? I would have a mechanic inspect it before you buy it. It could be something as simple as the throttle cable being adjusted too tightly. Or it could be something worse and you'll wind up spending way more than you thought you would to get it right in stock form. If money is remotely tight and this needs to be your daily driver, do yourself a favor and have it checked if you can't diagnose it yourself.

Of course, if money isn't a concern, then go for it! Just know that simple problems aren't always simple. Also that little things add up and can cause bigger problems, ie going too long w/o an alignment and having to buy tires and find that your tie rod ends are worn.

Good luck.

You may already know this, but the 240's engine/transmission are not exactly smooth. The harshness is something that was commented on by car magazines many times. After you realize it, it doesn't bother you. If you are used to driving a toyota or honda, you would notice a difference. Sorry guys, but they are smoother engines/transmission's ;)

ok, i've decided im gonna take it by a shop that specilizes in nissans to have them take a good look at everything. it'll cost me like 50 bucks but thats better than getting a POS

oh and the carfax report came out fine

remember that there's a thing called cold start that idles the car at 1500+ rpm.....but if it still did it after operating temp. was reached...then it could be a problem.
