I would pull your valve cover off and fix that. That sounds like your upper timing chain guide. If you dont fix it you timing chain could saw right through it an it might fall into the front of your engine and do something bad to your timing components. It takes like half hour to fix. Just buy rtv to reseal the valve cover.

yeah i wouldnt be surprised if you need a new tensioner, its that black thing under the front cover

mine was starting to make the nastiest noise of all time then i bought a new chain adn tensioner. I checked the new chain agaisnt my other three spare chains adn it had no noticable stretch compared to them. so, i wouldnt buythis if money is an object, otherwise from nissan its only like 30 bones

some people are refering to a black metal timing chain guide that bolts in right between the two cam sprockets, this thing was ordered to be removed from nissan. on three of my four KA, these have been broken off before i got the motors, so its very very common.

so remove that if its there. if its not, you can tell that the tensioner is crap because the chain physically hits the valve cover. you can either put your ear on the valvecover very near the front, or you can use a screwdriver or ratchet to amplify the noise (and you wont get cut by your fan). if you have the valve cover off you can see the chains damage to the valve cover

being that were on the subject of this, my motor was and still is making this nasty noise. I replaced all the timing compenents with all OEM and had my Nissan mechanic friend do it. Still making the noise, its coming from all over the place. Lifters??

yha could be lifters. Did you have him remove the upper guide. He should have because they were recalled by nissan.

i didnt say this earlier, but one time the bearing caps to my cams started loosening adn it sounded a whole hell of a lot like timing chain noise. so make sure all that stuff is torqued too if you've worked on it recently.

i wouldnt wish checking the lower guides on my enemy. Someone correct me if they've done it without doing the following:

you need to pull the oil pan off to get the lower front cover off because of the oil pick up. and to do that im pretty sure you need to loosen the motor mounts and slightly lift the motor.

now you might be able to pull off the front cover TO AN EXTENT, but im not sure how far, yoyu might be able to see anything, but im not sure as ive never done it with the motor in the car

I have this problem on my 96 KA24DE...sounds like "tick-tick-tick" upon acceleration up to 4k, then I don't hear it any longer...it bugs the hell outta me and I am afraid it may be more cost effective to just swap the motor. Lol why did Nissan overengineer the KA....
