You shouldn't have damage from water unless you sprayed something you shouldn't have. I should hope your oil cap was on tightly and the dipstick was down securely.
You may have gotten water on a finicky sensor or something. I remember one time I sprayed down the engine on my Probe GT and for a few days afterwards it liked to die at idle and occasionally sputter when I gave it gas in low rpms. Eventually the problem went away on it's own.... I'm guessing when everything had a chance to dry out properly.
My money is still on a clutch issue, though.
