S14 dies when headlights get turned on?

Hello all literally my first post ever but I have a 1995 LHD s14 with a notch top sr20det in it and i just put the motor back in after a clutch job. Everything runs great until you toggle/switch on the headlights, the whole car shuts down. I lose the engine, the christmas tree on the dash, the radio and my gauges, the door chime wont even work. Once this happens you have to disconnect the battery and connect it back in order to be able to start the car again. After all this i still don't have headlights. i'm thinking its a short because i had headlights for a night. No popped fuses or relays. If anyone has ever had any issues I'm sure it was a short relating issue. Thx
