This should probably be in the cam "megathread". But I was wondering what cams (duration) I should use. I am going with the S14 blacktop with VVI. I would like to keep the VVI if possible, also I plan to keep the stock t28 turbo. I not really worried about unleashing massive amounts of power (a little more would be nice, mainly midrange torque though), I just want a lumpy idle, and to keep everything as reliable as possible.

I believe if you get any aftermarket cam gears set(i.e. tomei, toda, hks) no matter what it will get ride of the VVI. You could even just use a S13 cam gear to get ride of the VVI, but you'll loose your low end. For cam shafts I would recommend the 256 degree cams, your not going to get a lot of lop with these, to accomplish this you would have to step up to the 260ish and above area to generate a loop like a V8. If you go with cam shafts that big you'll need to upgrade : valve springs, retainers, rocker arm stoppers, pretty much the whole head. I currently have a S14 blacktop also outta a 1998 silvia. I'm currently building mine so i'll probably go with the tomei pro cams and pro cam shafts, they are one of the easiest ones to install.

pon cam is 256 is 11.5inches of liftpro cam is 260 is 12.0 inches of liftpro cam is 270 is 12.5 inches of lift

give the guys at phase2motortrend a call they will point you in the right direction.

For you i'd stay with the 256 combo, you can still retain your stock cam gears and keep the vvi, the only down side is that you wont get a decent size lop.

let me know if you have any other questions.

Thankyou, haha...all I really wanted was the sound. I dont want to spend the money on the other stuff unless its at a reasonable price.

most cams now allow you to retain VTC.

I have HKS step 2 cams 264in 272out with VTC.

Where did you get your cams? I'm guessing you had to switch springs and retainers. How much did it all cost? Will the bigger cams hurt reliability and drivability?

on stage 1 cams you don't have to change anything.yes with stage 2 cams you have to upgrade valve springs. with stage 3 cams you have to upgrade to solid lifters as well as springs.

as long as you upgrade other parts with quality pieces then it should not hurt reliability. (although the more you upgrade, the harder you will probably drive, which will wear out parts quicker)

if you don't want to change out a bunch of stuff you can get stage 1 cams in higher durations that still retain VTC as well.

I bought my cams from Enjuku.
