I found this thread (as if it was hard), which details the WHOLE swap, including hubs, spindles, rotors, brakes, wheels, etc.:

(excelletn write-up, by the way)

If I am happy with the braking power of the S14 base, and I get my 4-lug rotors drilled out for 5-lug hubs, can I leave my Base-model spindles in place? Or do they need ot be swapped to do the 5-lug conversion? I would do it because I have a set of 5-lug rims and tires from my Maxima that I really like, and the rims do not come in 4-lug applications.

If I do this, it will be on a budget, so I have to take baby steps- first hubs (and rims) with the rotor drilling, THEN larger rotors and stronger/larger calipers.

Base s14 spindles work with 5-lug hubs.

I have heard mixed reports on brake system differences between the base and SE versions interms of caliper size and rotor size. Can anyone confirm or deny the informationin the link above regarding the differences in rotor size, caliper size, etc. between the base and the SE? Could the presence or absence of ABS play a role in this as well?

The difference was between 95-96 and 97-98. As far as I can tell, rotor size was the same, but caliper size was different. The differences in s14 were not due to se or base or abs...for any given model year, each brake option used the same parts (or sized parts for that matter). A FSM for both s14's would shed the most light on this subject, but I'll let you in on how this info was obtained. For one, all rotor sizes were the same...4 lug, 5 lug, or ABS. Just look into aftermarket rotors and you'll see. There is no discrepancy for year or abs. Brake pads on the other hand differ from 95 - 96 and 97-98 model years, so obviously caliper size changed and again there are no discrepancies between abs and non abs. But as I said, we need a FSM for both s14s to determine exact differences.

Rotor size was the same, however the spindles and the calipers were different.

The 98 spindle had a wider diameter between the two caliper mounting bolt holes.

The 98 calipers were also larger.

The 98 donor car did NOT have ABS.

The 96 Spindle and Front Caliper w/ 98 5-Lug Rotor did NOT work, the caliper rubbed the rotor.

That's weird...I've never seen two different types of 5-lug rotor before. In the begining of the reply you said the rotors were the same though...please clarify.

Has more to do with the caliper placement, rotors were the same size.
