I am pretty sure I know what causes this to happen, but I want to see if it is common with other cars. Whenever I start the car cold, (transmission fluid isn't warmed up yet), it drives and shifts very strangely. When I press the accelerator slightly for cruising, it seems as though the car hesitates and does not drive normally. Then, all by itself, it takes off quickly and sometimes downshifts automatically.

Once the car is warm (i.e. the transmission fluid warms up), the car drives fine. Is this normal, or do I have a problem?

Thanks.

I would change the fluid and filter before making any assumptions that something is messed up mechanically.
