Ok guys im looking for an lsd for my 97 240. I have found one with 80k on it, in very good condition. Its on a 95 240 SE auto. Is this a good one to buy or is the j30 stronger? I dont want a nismo, kaaz, or cusco b/c they say you have to change the rearend grease....lsd mix every 3k miles. Any ideas, thoughts, recommendations? Im open to all suggestions, I just want a reliable lsd thats not harsh and hard to maintain.

Only difference between the 240lsd and the J30 is the gear ratio. The J30 has a taller gear so another words instead of the 240 lsd 70 mph at 3000rpm, the J30 at 3000rpm is 75mph. If you are going the boost route IMO I would go the J30 route. If going J30 only get the 95 or 96 year, it is a direct bolt on. Only other thing you will need is the J30 2bolts hold front carrier and washers. The J30(abs) also is about 1/2 inch longer but it will bolt right up.

correct me if im wrong but wouldnt taller gear make you go a bit slower at the same RPM? For example, 2nd gear is taller than 3rd and at 3000 RPM you would be travelling at slower speed in 2nd gear...

Nope you are wrong! Taller gear will turn less rpm`s for the same mph. By the way I personally have done the swap and I am giving him my info from experience. Same wheels and tires different carriers. Think of it this way a J30 is a family cruiser. They did not design the car to do the fasted 1/4 mile. The car was designed to provide comfort and power.

The vlsd from the 240 will be a direct swap. Depending on the year of the j30, you may also have to buy and swap its axles.

Other than the output shaft bolt pattern and gear ratio, those two differentials are practically the same.

Plus, you'll probably like the higher gearing of the j30 vlsd on a turbo car.

I went and bought the vlsd from the auto today. $200.00. I didnt think that was too bad for one with 80k on it. Im just proud to hear that they can take a beating and actually hold up. It will just be used for daily driving and alittle fun on the weekends.
