Depending on the circumstances I'm sure that hurt was less than a face implant to the dash or windshield

Did you have a rock on it or something?
I remember we did a Toyota one when I was in their T-TEN program. Hooked it up to an extension cord backed up and plugged it in.
I was inside the garage watching through one of those big roll up doors, and it went high enough to disappear for a few seconds.

Air bags are no joke.

Oddly enough, the fast deployment is actually desirable. The reason for this is that you want the bag to have already been fully deployed by the time you hit it. Which is why sitting too close to it is a bad thing. And putting your feet on the dash is a huge no no. There have been a few instances of poorly designed systems where the airbags were triggered late into the collision event and actually deployed into the driver.

One of my cars has the Air Bag warning light On for about a year, I refused to take it to the dealer to reset the light. If an accident happens the air bags may not work. I don't care much, but I think that soon I must have to take the vehicle to have a scan anyway, because the failure of valves and the car didn't start and I imagine that the engine light will be On as well...too bad, I was accustomed to that warning light already...sigh*

That warning light stays on because there is a problem in the air bag system so it most likely will not deploy the bags
