Alright, I promise I searched before posting up, but I didn't find quite what I was looking for. Second, I have read a couple of posts by some ofthe main guys on here and wow you all are really astute about this stuff, much respect to you all. I have read a few books on suspension tuning so I'm a little bit familiar with terms so if anyone reading wants to go into detail about any thing in particular feel free--I'll try to keep up. Now onto the question:

I have a 91 240sx SE fastback on which I installed Tein HE coilovers. I had heard that these would fit the stock wheels from several sources, but that it was close. I'm not satisfied with the fit though, because [only up front] in fact the wheel has rubbed the bottom of the strut casing before, there are scratches and it makes a telltale klank when it happens.

The numbers:

stock s13 SE alloy wheels: 15x6 +40 offsetTein's note about the front fitment: +38 or less for a *6.5* inch wide wheel

This has urked me greatly so I have to do something about the wheels up front, either buy new wheels or get spacers. Money is short and when I buy wheels I want to do it right and get some nice quality wheels, so for now I have been considering spacers.

I probably only need about 5mm of room for the fit Tein mentions on thier site, and I was wondering if anybody can fathom a guess as to whether or not the stock wheel studs leave any room for an offset bump that is fairly small like 5 or 10mm?

Also I heard from a previous post that was moved here (I didn't realize thaht right away so I missed it at first) to avoid sandwhich style spacers? What other style is there?

Kind of a lame question I know but I don't have the car handy to measure and estimate myself-I live on campus and it's at home where the coilovers won't get scratched any further. Thanks for reading and suggestions that come to mind.

Don't get a spacer over 5mm if you want to use the stock studs...

I had some 8mm spacers made to clear my brakes, and I had to buy longer wheel studs. Get the smallest spacer you can get away with because it's cheaper, safer, and less complicated.. Make sure it's a good hubcentric type.

Are you saying the 5,, will fit stock studs, or just giving the good advice not to get a bigger wheel spacer than needed for the job?

I'm using stock wheels so I'm messing with stuff for looks, or because I want to. =p

make sure the lug nut runs down enough to be flush w/ the top of the stud. so with your stock setup measure how much stud is showing past the lug nut. this is roughly how big a spacer you could use and keep your wheel studs.

I'm not exactly sure what the maximum size is, but 8mm will not work.(I found out the hard way)

The guy who had them made for me suggested to use a maximum of 5mm if i want to use the stock studs..

but those slip on cheap spacers require longer studs.

i think bolt on spacers are the easiest and safest way to go.

They don't always require longer studs... it just depends on how big you need them to be.

Also, the bolt on spacers come in much larger thicknesses, which may or may not be what this guy wants.

Well.. according to the wheel offset calculator(http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html) found in the wheel faq, a 7" +35 wheel will be 8 mm closer to the strut. You will need a spacer that is 8mm bigger than whatever is required to clear HE's on stock wheels.

i was leaning toward getting the bolt on adaptors. that way i could change the bolt pattern to a more available pattern, but still keep my stock wheels.
