Well I've had this sound for a bit and cannot locate it. I've already searched but have had no luck with the same type of whine.

The whine almost sounds like a small supercharger, very high pitched and increases with rpm. It will happen in neutral and in any gear, most noticed in 1st gear. It will start as soon as the engine starts but only when I bring up the rpms so don't think its the oil pump, no set rpm it happens throughout the rpm range. I thought it might be my alternator over charging because it sounds like its coming from the front of the motor almost at the crank pulley. BUT, I can hear it with the hood closed while driving so I'm not 100% sure. My clutch is slipping right now and getting it replaced on Saturday along with new flywheel.

The car still pulls hard except the clutch slipping, but motor is strong. It has gotten a little louder since i first heard it and I'm at a stand still as to what the heck it is. Any help would be awesome.

Awesome, if it fixes your whinning sound let me know. I am going to get my clutch and flywheel replaced this weekend so I will let you know if it was something with the clutch system, I'm thinking pilot bearing or throwout bearing. I will let you know also.

not yet, its all getting changed along with my flywheel, clutch and rear main seal. I was leaking from the rear transmission seal so the low fluid might just be what is making it whine. Thanks for the info romerider. Stupid seals, my front seal is leaking also, gonna change that during my clutch install. I'll keep you guys posted if those solve the problem.

yeah i think my transmission is just low on fluid. I just got my clutch and flywheel and will attempt to install them tomorrow along with new fluid. Keep you guys posted. Hey, has anyone done a clutch and flywheel swap? This will be my first one while the engine is still in the car, I know the hard part is getting those two bolts at the top of the transmission. Any tips on doing it? Thanks!!!

unbolt the trany cross member and lower the back of the transmission with a jack to pitch it down a bit then get a swivel and like an 8" extension thats how i got to it came right out theres a bolt that has a ground on it too that dosn't look like it holds the transmission on it but it does near the starter

I had a cavalier that did the same thing...I thought it was cool till one day it didnt start. that was my first alternator i ever changed. The noise is one of the signs that your alternator is going bye bye.

Ok so I'm not low on transmission oil now and the whine is still present. I just added what was a little low in the transmission but no luck. Now its either my water pump, but I never ever overheat, not even on long trips, or its my alternator but I don't have any electronic spikes or drops. I'm very confused, could the water pump make a noise like a supercharger if its on its way out? Also can the Alternator make the same supercharger sound if its on its way out? Any way to narrow it down so I'm not spending money that I don't need to spend? Thanks guys and gals.

Friend had a similar problem and it got REAL loud, It was the bearings in the alternator going out. It worked fine just loud as balls.

someone on Zilvia.net just said that my oil pump died. My car is pulling hard still but I don't drive it very hard since this sound started. I am going to remove all my belts and start it for just a few seconds to see if its any of those pulleys tomorrow. If the sound is still there after I remove the belts what the heck could it be, I really hope its not the oil pump that died. Thanks for the post.

Ok so took it to a guy on the Nico Forums who works on a LOT of 240sx. He is saying its sounds like my front main seal is making the noise. My front main seal is leaking pretty bad. Getting it replaced on Thursday or Friday, hope that fixes the issue.

Does the noise go away when you push in the clutch?

My SR's transmission does that, I'm sure its something along the lines of an input shaft bearing.

no its the same, clutch in or out. From what the guy that works on 240's says, its my front main seal causing the whine. I will let everyone know on friday when I get it replaced.

Its from the front of the engine, it still happens even if the stero is off and no sound from speakers. It's for sure from the front of the engine, most likely its my crappy worn out front main seal.
