rod knock is pretty distinctive. It sounds like someone's knocking on something hard, and it gets louder and more intense with the revs. If the rod knock just started, then sometimes it goes away once the motor heats up and everything inside heat expands and tightens up. Either or, rod knocking requires a teardown and rebuild.

I get a feeleing its not rod nock then. i checked out everything again and i had my timing effed up again but im getting a feeling after reading another persons post thats its a timing chain or guide problem. i checked out my valve cover and it looks like the timing chain is hitting it and i dont have the timing chani guide/guard that goes in between the cam gears. MOST IMPORTANT. car starts up fine and idles normally for a few minutes as soon as i go to add throttle it only partially revs to mebe about 4000rpm and then it settles into a varying idle from about 1400rpm down to a shaking 450-550 rpm then it will die. Here is my mods list

1. 300zx maf2. deatschwerks 550cc injectors3. nismo fpr (tuned to 36-37 psi)4. greddy fmic(ls spec kit)5. greddy rs bov ( open atmosphere)6. apexi gt spec downpipe7. 3 inch exhaust with megan muffler.8. Crower stage 3 cams (272 duration i believe)9. solid rocker arm conversion10. je pistons11. eagle rods12. apexi safc2(current not plugged in, when i plug it in the car instantly dies)13.stock t25 thats been swirl ported14. ngk copper plugs15. all faze gauges( boost, af ratio, oil pressure, volt meter, water temp)16. vibrant performance intake kit.17. turbonetics manual boost controller18. jwt tuned ecu set up for 550cc injectors, fmic, atmosphere bov, s15 turbo@ 15lbs of boost, cams, and a few other things, boost cut and speed cut removed, i think.)

If anyone knows of a decenty tuning shop in the pittsburgh area OTHER THAN HYBRIDYNAMICS please email me at [email protected]

Elaborating a bit more . the knock is only off throttle at low rpms and honestly it sounds like my old ka did ( noisy a$$ sticky lifters) . also the idle is effed up and i know its not timing now its set right on tdc #1 cylinder second mark from left, 20 chain studs between timing marks intake cam at 10 oclock exhaust cam at roughly noon and cas is set at second dot as it is supposed to be. Oh and when i unplug my tps the engine dies instantly, and to even hit higher than 3000rpm i need to manually adjust the cas as i open the throttle body and even then when i let off of the tb and expect it to idle the engine just dies, roughly........ Any ideas please let me know im open to any thoughts at this point

Try revving it up a little, hold it steady making sure the noise is still audible, and unplug/plug the coil packs one at a time. If the sound goes away while the coil pack is unplugged, it is a bearing. To explain more in detail: When there is no combustion present, the piston will just float and ride the crank. When you plug the coil pack in and combustion is taking place, it forces the piston down causing the rod to hit the crack making the knocking noise. I did this to my last engine and found one of my bearings were bad. I bought another engine so I took the old one apart to see and there it was. Hope this helps.
