Hi guys,

Just need some help, my buddy has a s13 sr20 blacktop motor he just swapped into his coupe. Motor was running in another car before with no problems, my buddy got the motor, get into the car running fine for a couple of hours, he took it around the block a couple of times with no problems, but as he was pulling into the driveway the ticking started happening, we think its coming from the head.

What we have done so far:

- Swapped in 2 lifters we thought where making the sound - didnt help

- Pulled out the lifters and bled them all - still nothing

- Pulled the oil pan - oil was clean with no shavings or any thing that didn't look like it belonged.

any ideas what it could be? We were thinking of pulling the motor and inspecting the bottom end as a last resort, but wanted to get other opinions first.

thanks for the help.

Well first off stop running the car. Have you checked the head for oil? Seems you may have an oil pressure issue. Any oil pressure gauge hooked up?

Head is getting plenty of oil, we took of the valve cover and took out the spark plugs and tried to crank it, oil was flowing to the head with no obstructions at all. No oil pressure gauge installed.

Well the loudness of that ticking indicates to me you dont have the right pressure. You should have 40+ psi on cold start.

Have you pulled one of the cam caps off and inspected the journal and cam to see if its scarring?

Yup we did that too, no scaring on either cams that we could notice. I wlll see if he has an oil pressure gauge he can install and see if we can verify that.

Also, get a catch can and recirc that hose on the exhaust side. Bad things happen to SRs when you leave breather filters on there...

well on my sohc ka24e (when i had it) it made that exact noise but it was the timing guide chain that was worn out. i would be driving it for a couple of mins, about 30 min or so then it went away. about two three days later it came back. but idk if srs have the same problem. hope this helps.

Yeah, but he needs to recirculate it to the intake.. I definitely recommend doing it post MAF if you're only running the stock catch can. Pre MAF should only be if you put a 2nd catch can between the T fitting and the intake. (You don't want your maf sensor getting oil on it.)

Agreed, definitely run the hose back to the intake. I decided to ditch the entire catch can deal and just run the stock hose from the front of the valve cover T down to the intake tube. That is... If i can find a brand new one.

No way I'd do it without a catch can, bro.
