Hello, I have a s13 sr20det. I took the head out to get it resurfaced, cleaned and check. Im doing the headgasket. So, i don't know if this is an issue but wanted to check with ya all.

I'm trying to align the sprocket timing mark at 10 and 12 clock but the exhaust one don't want to stay at 12, it rolls back to 11 or 1. Do you guys ensure that the cam stays in place so I can put the chain back on?

Would it be ok if just hold it and put the chain around? or should it stay at 12 o clock mark and there is something wrong with the head?

Line it up and then pinch the chain with zip ties till you get the tensioners in so it can't jump teeth.

ahh, that's such a good idea. Do cams tend to do that? I didn't have this issue I pulled the head. Both cams were at 10 and 12.

I know they took them apart to inspect and clean them

If they're partway on or off a cam lobe, then yes, they try to creep back or forward from the pressure of the valve springs. Depends on the engine and the cam, some are more prone to move than others.
