are coolant temp sensors the same on all DE's?

am askin because i just swapped a 95 engine with 95 upper intake(so to remove the butterflyes), the engine i know used to run solid ~160F before i got it(used to be a friends engine, consult checked temp, it has a nismo t-stat) but now consult is showin ~190-205(fluxuates due to t-stat), this is all into a 93 240 with 93 wiring/ecu.

could it be that the sensors aren't the same, thus not reading right on the consult?, am asking this cause the stock temp gauge is only turning on when its reachin ~195F or so.

btw car drove around for a good 20 mins after warmup, with the temps movin ~190-205.

car has altima fans, that was with only 1 running(the other fan has some wiring issue or is dead, 1 fan should still hold fine though)

weird man, i dont have the nismo thermo, but my car always ran right at 190.

But yes sir, the sensors are not the same. neither the ECU sensor or the gauge sensor.

unfortunately i know for a fact that the gauge sensor for an s14 when on an s13 will read at normal temp only when the car is overheating....

But an s14 cts wont read so far out of spec as to develop the 5300 rpm "vtec" that a bad sensor will. either way, jsut swap your s13 one in and then report back

ok swapped S13 1 in, man what a difference, temp readings ~160-169F(169 bein max after couple hard runs), this is with 1 of 2 electric fans runnin full time, stock temp gauge works now as it should.

notes: S14 coolant temp sensor is not the same as S13 DOHC.

thats most excellent man.

i even had me second guessing myself so i was checking the 95 FSM against the 91-94 FSM. And the values are CLOSE man, but not close enough.

good to hear

nope, i learned this the easy way.

SOHC gauge sensor and DOHC gauge sensor jsut happen to be the same for S13s. The only thing you wont have is a Tach using a SOHC cluster on a DOHC

hmmm intresting..

i just recently swaped in a s14 dohc and im sure it has the s13 dohc temp sensor.

my question is can this be the cause of my check engine light? and the ecu is throwing code 13 which is the sensor i believe

hmmm, i dunno if it would throw a CEL, neither of my first two 240s ever threw a light, and they definately should have due to the rather extreme modifications (ie homemade intake manifold)

so get the s13 stuff in there, and let us know

Rock and napa have all kinds of coolant temp sensors. cant figure out what is what. 1991 and 1995 have some that are the same. 1998 seems different from 1991.
