I'm working on a 5 speed swap in my 1990 240. I picked up a transmission and a driveshaft and was just checking everything over, saw this big rubber coupler that connects the transmission to the driveshaft. Couple of questions. 1) Do these things ever break from wear or old age, and 2) What do people replace them with if they do? (OEM, aftermarket?) Thanks!

That's the carrier bearing and rubber isolator, and it's a piece of crap. They're no fun to replace, expensive, and difficult to balance.

Save some headache and order a 1-piece driveshaft from Shaftmasters ( http://ad.nicoclub.com/phpads/...3DNSN ) for about what you'd pay for a new carrier bearing.

You'll save some weight and have a perfectly balanced driveshaft as well.

Yeah, I know the carrier bearings are crappy. They look a lot like the ones used in DSM's as well that cause vibration, etc. This other thing is just like a rubber coupler with 6 holes, 3 bolt to the driveshaft and 3 bolt to the transmission, located just after the trans. Does the 1 piece driveshaft come with a new trans output yoke that would eliminate this piece as well? Thanks!

yup the one piece from shaft masters runs from the trans output to the diff flange.

one pieced beauty. Was going to order myself one from them but the brakes in my daily driver need replacing first....
